No wonder they call it Paradise Island!

A January 2004 trip to Paradise Island by Elk Rancher

We went to Paradise Island for a 10-year anniversary celebration. It was like having a second honeymoon! We were treated like royalty. The area is so friendly. We will definitely go back!

The accommodations were fair to good. I had read plenty of reviews of the resort, so was actually pleasantly surprised with our room. It was small. I would not recommend more than two adults to a room. The decor was nice, but the whole resort was somewhat old. They are in the process of renovating the rooms. The resort was small as well, which we loved, as we felt we were guests not a room number. Our room was very clean and well stocked. There was daily maid service! They even washed our dishes!!

The staff made the place. They were very friendly, accommodating, and appreciative. We met a lot of other guests of the resort, as they plan many activities you can sign up for. We did not see many kids. We were on an adult getaway, so we appreciated this!

We never went into the pool, as the ocean was a main attraction for us. But the hot tub was nice and hot and lots of power in the jets. We were right next to Atlantis, so when we wanted more action, we took a five-minute walk and went over there. Sometimes it took us longer because we were so busy checking out the billions of dollars worth of yachts between the resorts! We were able to see more sights at the Atlantis than we thought we would. I had read if you were not an Atlantis guest, you were not welcome to see much of what we saw. We even were able to acquire wristbands for a day and use their hot tubs, pools, and slides. It's all about who you schmooze with!! I would go back again. It's not the Ritz, but very comfortable.

Our view was fantastic. They were very accommodating without hovering. We both had a before-dinner cocktail while we looked over the menu. The menu had many choices, all of which were quite expensive. This was our one big night out so the sky was the limit.

We both ordered seafood. We were unsure which wine would go best with both of our choices, as they were quite different. Our maitre d’ was very happy to make a recommendation and thrilled when we accepted. We both ordered a soup before the main entree. Again, both were quite different: conch stew and French onion soup. Both were top notch. French onion soup can be quite salty, but this was quite tasty without being salty.

I ordered stone crab claws for my main entree. They brought me a warm bowl of water for washing my hands with lime, so my hands would not smell of fish. They changed it frequently while they cleaned up my shells. My husband had grouper stuffed with lobster, crab, and shrimp -- there was a rich sauce over it, which was not overbearing.

It was a quiet, but festive atmosphere with live music coming from the lounge below. It was one of the best lounge acts I have heard. We were able to visit with another couple for quite some time while we finished our wine and never felt pressured to leave even though we stayed quite late. They not only cleared away our dishes, but brushed away all crumbs and any evidence of a full course meal, leaving only our water and wine to enjoy as we ended our evening. Our total bill with a bottle of wine and tip came to US$175. Again, we spared no expense. A person could do it for less, if they wanted.

Snorkeling - Stuart's CoveBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Snorkeling"

We called the night before for reservations. They sent a shuttle for us, which was included in the price. It was about a 45-minute ride to the place. We went in January, so the water was a bit cool. I wore a wet suit, which I rented for $10. You can buy fish food for $4, but I wouldn't buy it.

We rode on a nice-sized, two-level boat, with five assistants on board. We made three stops. The first one was the longest (40 minutes) and we saw the most fish there -- literally thousands! My husband dove in and was quite taken back because they were everywhere!! He quickly motioned for me to get in. They were not afraid of us and stayed quite close. I snapped my fingers underwater like I was going to feed them and they came within an inch of me. They were very colorful and there were many species. We had a large area to check things out and saw fish I never even knew existed.

At the second stop (20-25 minutes), we checked out an old ship they sank about four years ago. There were not as many fish, but it was still interesting.

The last stop (20 minutes) was where we snorkeled with the sharks. We saw between 30 and 40, I would say. Even though it was a little nerve-wracking, the crew was very assuring it was safe and I am so glad I can say I did it. They came within about four feet of us, but never acted as if we were shark bait.

After we all got out, the crew then fed the sharks off of a spear, so the sharks came up out of the water inches from us! It was SO cool! The crew was very informative and professional. They run an excellent tour! I am so glad we went. It was a great way to end the day.

Rose Island TourBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

This is a tour I had heard about from others who had stayed at the same resort we stayed at. It was highly recommended. I pre-paid for the trip. It was $60, but this included everything.

Even though it was very much a party atmosphere, all 'types' were along. You could be as involved or removed from the group as you wanted.

We had all the drinks, alcoholic and non; we could drink from the time we stepped on the boat to the time we stepped off at the end of the day. Snacks, a full hot lunch, games (if you wanted to participate and for which we received a T-shirt), and sand volleyball were included. We snorkeled too, but that was an extra $7.50 per person. It wasn't great snorkeling, but we did see some fish, including a barracuda!

We partied on the way back to the resort and they had a dance contest as well. My husband and I placed LAST!! A bottle of rum was given to the winners and they deserved it!

It was a great day. We had a chance to get to know some of the other resort guests. We were the only ones on the whole island – there were maybe 50 people in all. It wasn't crowded at all. It was as much fun as those who had recommended it said it would be. It is a definite 'have to' if you go to Paradise Island!
