Ft. Lauderdale Resort with old charm

A January 2004 trip to Fort Lauderdale by HVACGordon

The Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort reminds us of the grand days of Florida. The resort is tastefully decorated and everything is well maintained. The staff is very friendly, especially the concierge director, Felipe Correa, with his knowledge of the area, including history and things to see.

Ft Lauderdale Beach Resort
Best Things Nearby:
One of the greatest beaches in Florida is across the street. We enjoyed walking along the sidewalk next to the beach -- it goes for miles. The Galleria Mall is within walking distance and has over 150 stores and restaurants.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort has all kinds of activities; however, we tend to do our own thing as we have been to the area quite a few times. A few of the Activities that may interest you include the following: • A kick of meeting at 9:00 AM Monday with Bagels, Coffee and Juice that includes a description of the following tours. The concierge Felipe Correa does a great job of handling the meeting, no pressure at all. • A Florida Everglades tour from 11:00 AM to 3PM, Adults $41.00 Children $31.00 including transportation. • Day & Night Miami Tour 1:00PM to 8PM Adults $41.00 Children $31.00 including transportation. • A live Alligator and Snake nature show at the pool area. • The Pool is located on a second floor deck with a large Jacuzzi on a third level deck. Plenty of Lounge chairs and towels. Both areas are sunny until late afternoon. • The resort has a Fitness room with exercise equipment and treadmills. • Some of the parking is indoors; we did not have any problem finding a parking space. I recommend using the parking in the rear of the building, use Birch Ave next to the 7-11 store and you will be at the rear entrance.

Resort Experience:
We did not know what to expect when we arrived to the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. The building is an old high-rise a block away from the beach, a little honky tonk on the street from the building to the beach. We had a good feeling; during check-in, everyone was very friendly and the old building was impeccably maintained.

After checking into our unit on the fifteenth floor, which was a one-bedroom corner unit, we were pleased with the view of the intercoastal waterway and the beach view from the balcony. The furnishings are very tasteful in old Florida-style decor. The ocean view master bedroom has a 20” TV, king size bed, two end tables, a bureau, and a good size closet. A safe is located in the closet and has a mandatory charge of $10 a week. The full kitchen is nice, pink, and well equipped with full-size appliances. The combination living room/dining room is nice, airy, and bright with colors that are definitely classic Florida. The dining room has a good-size glass-topped table with four sturdy chairs. The living room has a sleep sofa, glass-topped coffee table, and two glass-topped end tables, all in Florida décor with wrought-iron palm tree designs. The artwork on the walls is very nice. The living room also has a cleverly hidden Murphy bed. The bathroom has a large shower (no tub) with adequate drawers and a large mirror. The corridor next to the bathroom has a counter with large mirror and a very handy cabinet with drawers, but no sink.

They do charge you $.55 for any connected call on the phone system, even local calls and 800 numbers -- this can add up very quickly. We used our cell phone -- Verizon coverage was good in the area. I use a laptop with my cell phone as a modem and use it after 9pm and before 6am; with Verizon, it is free with my plan.

The laundry area is located on the ground level and is free of charge; they supply detergent at the front desk free of charge, too.

Charley's CrabBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Charley’s Crab House"

We found that the best dining experience was at Charley Crab. We had the early bird dinner served Monday through to Saturday from 4 to 5:45pm (it’s also available from 3:30 to 5:45pm on Sunday). The menu is full course. It started with housemaid pate and crackers and bread, soup, or salad. I recommend the Bahamian chowder or the Martha’s Vineyard salad. We both had the same main entrée, grilled lightly-blackened salmon, which was great. Dessert offerings include Key Lime pie, which was the best that we have ever had. We also had iced tea with the meal and hot coffee later (all included). All of this cost $17 each. We dined outdoors and watched the activity on the intercoastal waterway while dining.

Restaurant | "McSorleys Beach & Bar Grille"

McSorleys is a nice, clean Irish pub located around the corner from the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort.

The menu will satisfy anyone, the staff is friendly, and the food is prepared very well. They will also do take-out of anything on the menu. They have two large bars with plasma TVs. Booths are also available. We had the seasonal garden salad with a good-size grilled salmon and three large grilled shrimp for $9.95 per person. The meal was great.
