A December 2003 trip
to Damascus by savella
Quote: Having gone to Cyprus for three weeks my older sister, we came up with a plan to visit our aunt who lives in Damascus, Syria.
The hilarious part was that the amount of time it takes to go to Syria from Cyprus is only 40-45 minutes (I say that because I am more used to over an hour plane journeys).
The amazing part over there is the culture - a mixture of Arabian and a little European, and I would say there is some mystery too when you walk around in the Arabian bazaar (a HUGE building with loads of shops) and the Christian bazaar(this bazaar is a lot more European than the Arabian one).
But I would say that as an overall experience, it was a very different weekend than the normal weekend, due to difference of culture and different surroundings.
Yeah,it was fun to spend time with my sister...
Another major food that you MUST try or buy while you're in Syria is the Syrian nuts. Syria is well-known for their cashew nuts which are double the size of the European ones, and they taste a LOT nicer. They sell them by the kilo and price-wise they are very cheap. Damascus has got a mountain you can't miss. On the way there, you will come across a huge road, which offers all sorts of things from clothes to nuts for purchase. Most of the shops sell nuts that they roast in the store for freshness.
