The ocean and the beach, Mission San Luis Rey, Legoland

Best Things About the Resort:
It's in a wonderful location, right across the street (more like a lane) from the beach.

Resort Experience:
We had a 2 bedroom unit and, although it seemed small compared to some we've been in, it was perfect for the four of us. (The location made up for the size.) The kitchen had everything you'd need (except a teapot but I always bring one with me) and you could phone for extra things that weren't standard, issue like a curling iron, a Teflon frying pan, etc. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly.

We went on a whale watching tour arranged by the resort, a 40 ft sailing yacht with the four of us plus the "captain". We didn't see any whales but it was a wonderful experience. It sure beat going on one of those huge ships out of San Diego plus fighting with the traffic to get there and back. (We sailed out of Oceanside, about 10 minutes north.) The big ships guarantee that you'll see a whale but how they do it is they give you free tickets to keep coming back until you DO see one. Since most people are only there for a short time, it doesn't cost them anything.

This restaurant was recommended to us by several locals, and we were not disappointed. It is actually a fish shop with a restaurant attached, so it's more of a casual atmosphere, but the food is wonderful. It's a very popular place, and we were told they don't take reservations, but when we arrived to find a lineup, we were told we could have phoned ahead to have our name put on the list! (I thought that was a reservation.) Maybe it means you can only phone within the same day?? They let you bring your own wine and only charged a $5 corkage fee.
