A November 2003 trip
to Orlando by jo_j_k
Quote: This was week two of our Walt Disney World trip. At the beginning of this week, we moved from the AKL to the Orange Lake Resort. This week was less about Disney and more about the other activies in Orlando.
Hotel | "Orange Lake Country Club"
The activities were great. While we did not avail ourselves of all (or even most) of them, their variety alone had me impressed. They had a wonderful variety of pools -- heated and not -- and we used them as best we could (it can get chilly in December). I really liked the poolside bar!
Our travel companions used the mini-golf course and loved it. I wish we had had time to use the clubhouse as there was plenty to do there.
Unfortunately, there were some negatives. Our room appeared to be a smoking one -- there was a stack of ashtrays on the counter. While there was no smell (I would have immediately turned around and complained), I noticed cigarette burns and nicotine stains on the furniture and counters. Also, the countertops were chipped and worn. The couch was in sad shape as well.
It was a clean room and nicely appointed, so I did not complain -- I probably should have, but that's really not my style.
I was furious about the cheapness of the resort though. In all the other resorts I've stayed at so far (Gold Crown and otherwise), I've always gotten a free mid-week cleaning. You only got one (ONE) at this place IF you stayed for two or more weeks. On top of that, while they did provide us with toilet paper and some other such essentials, we were informed that if we ran out, we could *purchase* more. That really bugged me. Some things I understand they want to say that about, but TOILET PAPER?
Oh, and the salesman ticked me off too. I understand they want me to buy there, but frankly I'm not interested. I've got more than enough timeshare with my one week -- I don't want more. I also have our time carefully scheduled and regardless of whatever freebie they offer, I don't want to sit through a spiel. I informed the salesman that we would not have time for the free in-room breakfast that was offered. The guy called for the third time about this at 8am on our second SUNDAY. That is beyond rude.
The maintenance guys were great. I had a stopped-up toilet and they came out very quickly to fix it; when the light went out in the fridge, they also fixed that right away.
So while the resort was very nice, the problems with the room and the irritating salesman really made me feel lukewarm about the place. Our stay at the Embassy on Lake Bryan (I think) was nicer and if I don't need a three-bedroom next time, I'll go back to the Vistana.
