Quote: I spent four months living in Basrah in Saddam's former palace with the British Army and I took the opportunty to get to know locals and visit the surrounding area.

Overview

Quote:
In Basrah, get out to the restaurants, especially on the riverfront. The food is cheap, beer is available, and locals, despite the press reports, friendly. Riverboat trip on Shatt Al Arab to Picnic Island is a must.

Quick Tips:

Don't bother going to see the Garden of Eden where the Tigris and Euphrates meet - it is a run-down hotel and car park now.

Best Way To Get Around:

Use taxis - they are cheap and a safe way to travel.
