Dunedin Getaway

A January 2004 trip to Dunedin by britch

This was a short break to explore Dunedin and surrounds. We saw sights including Lanarch Castle and Taieri Gorge Railway. They were both well worth a visit.

The accommodation was good, clean, and comfortable. We had a studio room with a separate bathroom that sleeps three. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant served good food at reasonable prices. The hotel was within walking distance of the city centre and St Kildas Beach.

Restaurant

A lovely little pub on the waterfront at St. Clairs. Food was worth waiting for, as it was a busy Saturday night. Great atmosphere.

We walked half an hour from our hotel, and it was worth the walk. Pizza bread and dips followed by pork and veges; we could not eat it all. Value for money. The pizzas being served looked delicious.

Lanarch CastleBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

A step back in time to New Zealand's only castle built in the style of the late 1800s. The craftsmanship is incredible, beyond description, and it was all done on site, which is half a day's travel by horse coach at the time it was built. It would have been absolute decadence back then, with no expenses spared.

Lanarch Castle
The Peninsular Dunedin, New Zealand

This was an awesome trip through spectacular country. The railway goes through an incredible gorge and was made by men with picks and shovels over 100 years ago. You look down to the river from the side of the cliffs and high bridges.

Attraction

It is a great way to get to know the city, with all the points of interest pointed out, together with a rundown on the local history. For the price, you can use the service all day long. I would recommend going first thing in the morning to decide where to go later, and then use the bus to get from place to place.
