Paradise in Acapulco

A January 2004 trip to Acapulco by mosaic

Our trip to the Mayan Palace in Acapulco was just want we needed after a very busy Christmas season. The weather was perfect in Acapulco this time of year and the people, as always, were friendly, warm, and very hospitable.

Fresh apples await you at the registration desk, where information is taken by friendly staff. You then are escorted to the Lobby Bar, where you can relax and enjoy a complimentary drink.

The activity staff put on a "Chicago Show" that was fabulous. They are so talented and their dancing skills and performing skills are wonderful. It was a great evening in the garden setting.

The pool is fabulous. We call it "The Mile-Long Pool" because apart from huge pool areas, there is a stretch of pool that seems to go on forever.

Our friends that visited with us enjoyed the exercise room.

Every day, the floors are washed, the showers are scrubbed and the bed linens are changed. While you are out enjoying dinner, the maids return to turn down your bed and leave Hershey candy kisses on your pillows. Fresh towels are replenished as well.

The security is also exceptional at this resort. Everyone wears a wristband and there are security staff around the property at all times. It is very safe at the Mayan Palace.

We enjoyed a thrilling experience of seeing the cliff divers during their evening dives. It sure was wonderful. The last diver at 10:30pm dove into the water holding two lighted torches. It was great. Of course, they expect a tip upon finishing their dives and there is a small charge to enter the diving area. It is well worth the expense. On this particular outing, we decided to eat downtown at the Forzia Italia restaurant before going over to the cliff divers. Well, our taxi driver waited while we ate and then took us over to the divers. He waited while we saw the divers and then took us back to the Mayan Palace, which is quite a long drive back to our resort. He charged us round trip, so we thought that was very good. Splitting the cost with our friends made it very economical. This Italian restaurant was wonderful, reasonably priced and fun.

Our friends went on the Jungle Tour and never did see a jungle. Don't think it was worth the trip. However, they did enjoy the experience of going on a boat ride over to an island, having a mud pack facial and enjoying a good chicken and rice lunch.

Quick Tips:

They have a seven-day Breakfast Buffet package that costs only around US. The breakfast buffet is wonderful.

They also have a seven-day Dinner Buffet package that costs only around US. It is well worth the money. The theme buffets are fabulous, so delicious, and the waiters are friendly and attentive. We chose to get the dinner package. The coupons are good for a 15-day interval, so me mixed up our Mayan Palace dinners with dinners downtown. In this way, we got to enjoy the beautiful Acapulco evenings with the wonderful views as well as savour the resort's delicious buffets.

We ate breakfast and most lunches in our kitchen area. Some lunches we ate on the beach. They serve the most delicious hamburgers at the Mayan Palace. They also have a vegetable and fruit plate that is nutritious and delicious. The beach bar staff is so good. Of course, Happy Hour is busy, but the staff work so hard and as fast as they can go.

The beautiful sunsets in Acapulco are the best. It doesn't get much better than that.

Best Way To Get Around:

Although the airport is only about 10 minutes from the airport, they charge anywhere from - US to get to the Mayan Palace. Of couse, the charge to go back to the airport is only around US. There is no consistency in taxi fares, so make sure you negotiate the price BEFORE getting into the taxi.

Downtown you can use public transportation. Make sure you take the yellow buses that travel just up and down the main street. Otherwise you will end up in the mountains. The fare is only around 4 pesos and they are air-conditioned and very easy and handy to use.

Money exchange is another factor to think about. You always get a better rate downtown at the bank or a money exchange rather than at the resorts. The value of the Canadian dollar is much better these days, so my advice would be to take Canadian dollars and exchange downtown at the Bank of Nova Scotia for your best rate. There is only a few pesos different in the Canadian and American dollar now.

Overall, it is wonderful at the Mayan Palace. Enjoy !!!!!
