Overview

Crikey mate! What a ripper!!!
From start to finish, a trip to Fraser will be nothing less than fantastic. From the moment you sit in the car hire briefing room, to the moment you come face to face with a dingo, the whole experience is amazing. Make sure you go on a self-drive package, as the massive tour buses that charge round the island miss out on some of the best areas. A must is Lake McKenzie. With tranquil blue warm water, it is picture-perfect. Eli Creek is another top attraction. You can walk along the raised boardwalk, then laze in the creek as the cool waters bring you gently back down to the beach - beautiful.

Quick Tips:

Leave at least 2 hours for Lake McKenzie - there really is no limit to the amount of time we could have spent there. Take plenty of loo roll, and bottled water. Do not swim in the sea. Make sure you have your tides written down - I don't think the hire company would appreciate a soggy, smelly jeep!

Best Way To Get Around:

4x4 is the only way to get around the island - remember, the main highway is the beach!
While the prospect of spending two nights in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but a flimsy bit of plastic to protect you from the elements, may not appeal to everyone, the ONLY way to do Fraser is to camp. There are a number of campsites around the island, but most have a 9pm quiet time policy, so most backpackers head to the beach.

Before you leave for the island, you will be warned of the dingos and, believe me, you will see them. The faintest smell of cooking and they will be round your campsite like a shot, whether you notice them or not! One popular place to camp is Indian Head and getting up at 4am to catch the sunrise is amazing.
