Little Gem of the South Caribbean

An August 2003 trip to Trinidad by mike7378

This is a truly facinating island, a mix of cultures in perfect balance. Not a major tourist island, it is more for the adventurous and seasoned traveller.

Must see:
Mount St Benedict's monastery, eat "shark and bake" at Maracas Beach, see the mud volcanoes in the south. Visit Independence Square.

Quick Tips:

This is not an island for novice travellers. The island's violent crime rate is extremely high, due partly to inter-governmental bickering. Sensible precautions must be taken, and it is advisable not to venture out at night alone, especially in the non-tourist areas in the north of the island, e.g., Laventille...

Be wise and check information with the foreign office beforehand, as the travel situation varies.

Best Way To Get Around:

Easiest way is a taxi, ranging from -5 TT. Same with the "maxi taxis," but note that these are not private, and although car hire is cheap, it is not recommended unless you have confident driving skills, or know the lay of the land well.
