Backpacking In Dominican Republic

A December 2003 trip to Puerto Plata by sammer003

This was a two week adventure along the north shore of the Dominican Republic to see the sights and enjoy the sun and food the way the locals do. No all-inclusives or resorts of any kind on this trip.

Talk to the locals, ask them what the sights are, and compare that to your travel book...you have the Rough Guide for the Dominican Republic...right?!?!

Quick Tips:

Take US currency and exchange at banks, or I found any Western Union gave very good exchange rates, but ask what it is first; and try to get 500 RD and smaller bills. Also take earplugs, maybe a flashlight.

Best Way To Get Around:

Like any tourist, walking is enjoyable, and a great way to see the local areas. Motoconchos are quick and inexpensive, and kind of fun. They seem dangerous, but they are very good drivers, and aware of other oncoming traffic. Guaguas are great for a day trip to one town and back. They can get crammed, and be sure you know where to get out, and don't ask how much the ride will be. Taxis are the most expensive, but safe, recommended at night. Buses from town to town are great, cheap, and comfortable.
This is a great place to stay. They have a small kitchenette, fridge, basic eating and cooking utensils. Rooms vary in price and size, but I got a single room for $20 per night, but was then moved to an apartment-sized room, with kitchen, dining, couch, two bedrooms, and bathroom, for the same price. It was great, very close to Playa Sosua, and is located on the locals area of Sosua, Los Charamicos.
