Wolf Creek Ski Trip

A February 2002 trip to Pagosa Springs by skichik

A winter wonderland in southern Colorado along with some great hot springs after a long day of skiing.

In addition to a great introductory two days to skiing at Wolf Creek Ski Resort with a fantastic instructor (Jeannette Howey)... Durango was celebrating their annual Winter Snowdown. Check with the railroad, but get tickets for the Narrow Gauge on the last day of the festivities. You will see the Hot Air Balloons fired up. For those without children, they do have an adults-only enclosed caboose for an add'l charge with champagne.

Quick Tips:

If you enjoy jacuzzis and/or hot springs you must try the Pagosa Hot Springs. They have 15 different pools of varying temperatures from just below body temperature to 115 degrees (it's affectionately called the Lobster Pot). You can get a pass for the entire week (you'll get your photo taken) and it was worth every minute I spent there. You can also take a sleigh ride to a quaint and colorful dinner in the evening under the stars - bundle up. If you are comfortable with winter driving - take a day trip to Silverton - it's an absolutely beautiful drive in the Colorado Rockies and will see them in a way you can't otherwise. For those more adventurous, you can continue from Silverton onto Ouray, but it was too late in the day for me to continue on.

Best Way To Get Around:

While the Fairfield Resort does supply some type of transportation, being a Southern California native, I still found my car to be the best form of transportation.
Best Things Nearby:
Wolf Creek Ski Resort - it's a small resort (9 chair lifts), but it was a great way to spend two days learning how to ski.

Pagosa Hot Springs - great way to spend an evening if you like to do that sort of thing.

Grocery Store - literally right around the corner from the resort.

Best Things About the Resort:
Very well appointed, and spacious. It had a washer/dryer in the unit which proved invaluable. Parking was right outside my condo which was good considering the time of year I was there. Most mornings were below 0.

Resort Experience:
The resort is very big - it has an activities center that seems to be knowledgeable about their clientele - they fit me very well for skis and boots. I was more focused on the surrounding activities, not what the resort provided, so unfortunately I'm no help there.

My only complaint is that checking in by myself for a 2-bedroom condo did not go unnoticed. One of the staff commented, "...the 2 bedroom condo seems too big for just one person..." which was completely inappropriate, but other than that, everyone was very friendly.
