Left my soul in Samana

A November 1996 trip to Santo Domingo by mannyb

My honeymoon was more than I expected ( well...) when I took a few days and visited Samana in the east coast of the Dominican Republic.

This is a quaint town located on a cliff. It is like 6 hours driving from Puerto Plata, a major airport in DR. The view is breathtaking, while the pace is so relaxed, you will fall in love once again. I cannot wait to go again!!! When we went there, it was whale watching season. So the sight on seeing humpback whales migrating is an event by itself.

Quick Tips:

Go with your partner. This is ONE romantic place. Bring a good book and good company, this town shouts tranquility. The hotel I stayed at is called Gran Bahia. It sits on a cliff with the best view of the sea.

Best Way To Get Around:

Well, I rented a car and I can say it is a LONGGG drive. I have no idea about other airports, but for sure do not use a taxi to get there and I do not trust public transportation in the DR.
These rooms are not only big, comfy and well supplied, but the view!!! The doors to the terrace opened to see the sea at its best. The breeze that enters will lull you to sleep. There are so many places in the lobby and surrounding areas to just relax and read. This is a hotel that will make you relax or fall in love.

Hotel Gran Bahia
Samana Drive Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

This is a quaint restaurant for the guests in the hotel but also one that the locals visit. Very good food with a mix that will serve any taste. They had pasta, local cuisine, etc. A great buy for your buck too cause it is really cheap in regards to pricing.

Attraction | "Whale watching"

It is very exiting. Taking the boat tour brings you up close to the action but you can still see them from shore. Seeing such a big animal in its habitat makes you see how beautiful nature is. Great fun for the whole family.

Story/Tip

The trip there is both long and treacherous. The roads, or what passes for a road, are still dirt in some areas with no stores, gas stations or population . It is remote but worth the trip. Bear all this information in mind if you are going.
