Walk the nature trails at Coffee State Park, attend cultural events sponsored by Coffee Alliance for the Arts, take a class at South Georgia College or just hang-out with friends.

Quick Tips:

Douglas is a typical small southern town with strong christian sentiment.

Best Way To Get Around:

Douglas does not as yet boast a public transit system. Due to the rural nature of our community a vehicle is a necessity. We are serviced by Grey Hound Bus Line. The nearest commercial airport is Jacksonville International located apx. 100 miles southeast. The Amtrak station is in Jesup 70 miles northeast. So there we are only isolated when we choose to be.

The accomodations are the most comforting I have found anywhere. The refrigerator is stocked with healthy food, the living area is clean if sometimes cluttered. The people are polite and well mannered. I can always find something interesting to do. This is home.

Fern Bank

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Fern Bank"

Quote:
Don't be put off by the paper plates. The Fern Bank serves the best steaks of anyone anywhere. You can trust me on this or try one for yourself. The speciality is Black Angus Beef, but chops and chicken are also available. The salad fixings are always fresh and your beverage glass is always full. The Fernbank is a bit rustic, the lights are dim. A cozy corner table can be romantic. The Fern Bank is a favorite night-out for young and not so young lovers. The bar is well stocked. The clientele are of the white collar species. The local rednecks have their own watering holes.

Catfish House

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
The Catfish House is a family owned restaurant and a local favorite. The lights are too bright for me and the dining room can be noisy if you are unfortunate enough to be seated near the family with undisciplined children. Enough said about the atmosphere, when one hungers for fish... the fishing is always great at the Catfish House. Crisp fried catfish served with hot cheese grits, coleslaw, hush puppies and iced tea is the house speciality. Seafood choices and a seafood buffet are other favorites.

This family owned and operated restaurant is located right on the farm. The steaks are trimmed lean and cooked just the way you like them. The fixings are nothing special, but that takes out the guess work when you know its steak, salad and a potato. This restaurant is a favorite for office Christmas parties.

Coffee State Park

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
Coffee State Park is one of those little secrets the locals like to keep for themselves. Many community events, family reunions and church socials take place there. The park is owned by the state and is a full service park. It offers camping, rental cottages, a swimming pool, a play ground, a lake and an historically accurate pioneer village. The flora and fauna give a fair representaion of our coastal area. The swampy walkways along the Seventeen Mile River afford knobby kneed cypress trees, an occasional alligator and if you're unlucky or not paying attention a cotton mouthed mocassion. The higher walkways lead through piney woods, home of the gopher tortoise and non-poisonous black racer...Read More

Story/Tip

Quote:
In spite of the recent news headlines heralding our late sheriff's suicide while being investigating for drug trafficking, Douglas is a very low profile and safe place to live.

About 9,000 individuals call Douglas home. We are a family oriented community. I know many of these families into the third generation. I meet aquantances at virtually every public outing. We exchange nods and pleasantries at the grocery store, the bank and Walmart.

We have a community college, a progressive hospital and enough to industry to support our growing economy. If you're looking for a place to raise a family, Douglas just may be that place.
