Mind Yourself in London

Overview

Double Decker Bus Photo - London, England
Quote:
London is a fabulous city. The best thing to do after arriving from an all night flight is to just walk and sightsee. Take in the fresh air and just explore with a map. The tube is a great way to get around more quickly. Check out Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the London Aquarium, Tower and Millenium Bridges and Harrod's. Ride a double decker bus. Oh, remember to "Mind the Gap!"Quick Tips: Pay attention to the exchange rate before arriving. On December 2, 2003, exchanged to 101 pounds at a rate of 1.84USD to 1 pound plus commission fees. Prices seemed to me to be very similar to US prices so you can see how expensive a visit can get. If you like McDonald's, then you should h...Read More

I stayed in the six bed dorm-style room. It was a cheap sleep as that is all I had time to do in the room. Basic needs were met. I was provided sheets, pillow, and a blanket. We were given an English breakfast of toast, jelly, and juice or coffee.

I stayed on the fourth floor. One enters from the street, checks in with the 24 hour attendant, and then proceeds to the fourth floor for check-in. The staff was friendly and nice. Atmosphere was calm and quiet even though they were quite busy, but I am sure not as busy as in the summer. Very easy directions from Piccadilly Circus located at their website here.

The London Eye

Attraction

I went up at night and I was not prepared for the view that I got. It was misty raining outside and the views were great. I could not see everything as it was dark. I bought an observation map that shows London buildings during daylight hours so it can be a guessing game to figure out what some of the buildings are at night. It takes approximately 30 minutes to go all the way around and back to earth. It is sponsored by British Airways and the announcer talks as if you were riding in an airplane. Ticket admission was $25USD. One should expect a security check before boarding.

This is a very nice aquarium. It is located a short walk down from the London Eye and across the Thames river from the Parliament. It offers a nice display of fish from around the world including fish from the USA. It features the Thames River in a manner that is similar to how the Tennessee Aquarium features the Tennessee River. There is also a very, very cool shark tank. The sharks swim right up to you. Cost is about 8 pounds.

Harrod's is an awesome store. I have never been to a department store like this. You can get just about anything you want at this store. It seems like it was at least two city blocks long and wide. It is definitely worth a visit even if you do not buy anything. Pictures are not allowed on the inside except at the Princess Diana and Dodi memorial. It is very easy to get to using the tube or bus system.

Piccadilly Circus is like Times Square in New York with lots of lights and cars and people. It is the starting point for many things to do. If you like excitement, then this is the place to visit. Trafalgar Square is a short walk away from Piccadilly Circus.

What a sight! I got there too late to see the changing of the guard which begins at 11:30 each day. It is still amazing that the guards just stand there so still. They do make regimented movements at regular intervals. After you see the Palace, walk over to St. James' park. It has been there for over 400 years. It is a bird refuge with pelicans! The Palace is located down the street through the large gates to the left facing Trafalgar Square.

London to Chicago Photo - London, England
Quote:
On board the United Airlines 777, I took many pictures of the GPS system that tracked our journey from London to Chicago. Here a few shots to showcase the travel route.

Notes: If you travel in the winter, be prepared for travel delays due to the weather. We left London about 2 hours late due to very heavy fog. In Chicago, my flight to Indianapolis was delayed about three hours due to bad weather.

Give yourself plenty of time to navigate London Heathrow Airport.

United offers a large selection of in-flight movies and music channels that will take a regular headphone plug, so you can use your own, which provide better sound than the airline set.

London Heathrow Airport is a very busy place. Allow yourself PLENTY of time to navigate the airport. Upon arrival, you will need to walk a long distance through tunnels and pathways to get to customs. I was asked my purpose for visiting and how long I was going to stay. I decided to take the Tube (the Underground) into the city. You can take the direct non-stop Heathrow Express train which will get you into the city in 30 minutes and costs around 20 pounds. The Heathrow extension of the Tube (built by the Queen, not literally) takes about 45 minutes and costs only 5.10 pounds for a day pass purchased after 9:30am. It makes many stops along the way but it is worth saving about 15 pounds or a...Read More
