Cheap travel to DC is possible. You just need to be willing to sacrifice a little convenience.

Hotel | "Chrystal City Shearaton"

A great hotel. When I got there I couldn't believe I was getting such a great room for the money I spent. It was very close to the subway and restaurants.

Attraction | "Smithsonian"

A great way to spend a day, and it's free! There are great exhibits featuring dinosaurs, etc. There is an Imax theater inside the museum. There's also a nice restaurant.

Attraction | "National Zoo"

I expected a lot more from the national zoo. It's about equivalent to any major city zoo. Its bright spot was the panda exhibit. All and all a nice zoo, but I prefer the Bronx Zoo or San Diego.

Story/Tip

I got the best deal on a plane ticket going into Dulles rather than Reagan Intl. I then took a bus from the airport to a subway stop. I took a subway to a stop about a block from my hotel. My biggest savings were from using the subway system (I spent $15 for the week end) and visiting free attractions (Smithsonian museums and The National Zoo).
