Quote: York is a wonderful city, one of my favourite places in England. From Romans to Vikings to the Middle Ages, it's a history lesson. By a high speed train, York is only 2h away from London's King's Cross station.

We enjoyed everything we saw in York: the medieval walls over which we can walk, the gorgeous Lendal Bridge over the Ouse, the Minster (cathedral), Jorvik Centre, the Shambles (old medieval street).Quick Tips: We left London very early and stayed in York until the end of the day. Although we had a busy day, we did not have to bother about luggage and accomodation. On the other hand, York has much to offer and you may want to have more time there. The York Minster is the largest cathedral in northern Europe and certainly one of the most beautiful in the world. It is very well illuminated through its many stained glass windows. The present building was started in the 13th century and completed only 250 years after. It has recently undergone a long restoration. Its organ contains over 5,300 pipes.

Jorvik was the name of the city when it was home of the viking Danes that arrived in 867 AD. Visitors can learn about them at Jorvik Viking Centre. This interesting archeological museum displays objects from the 10th century found in excavations on the site. A Disneyland-type cart ride shows every aspect of life back then, with sounds and smells.

Located on top of a hill, Clifford's Tower was built in the 13th century by William the Conqueror. In 1190, when a wood tower existed on this site, a tragedy took place there: the Jewish population committed a mass suicide, as a response to the attempts of forcing them to be baptized.

The Shambles is one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe. Once housing butchers' shops, hence its name, today it's a touristic street with restaurants, clothing and souvenir shops. The oldest houses date back to the 14th century.
