Spent a week in Acapulco at the fabulous Mayan Palace.

Mayan Palace Acapulco

Best Things Nearby:
12-mile long stretch of beach fronting the resort with lifeguards on duty. Horseback riding, dune buggy, and ultralight flights are offered on the beach from local vendors.

Best Things About the Resort:
Garden setting and a fabulous swimming pool.

Resort Experience:
Our room was beautifully arranged, with luxurious marble throughout. Twice daily maid service and turndown service at night make you feel pampered beyond belief. The setting of the Mayan Palace Acapulco is fabulous, set apart outside of the city yet still accessable to it all. The resort is filled with beautiful gardens and canals, birds are singing, and butterflies flit about.

Although it is a very large resort the layout makes it feel secluded and the pool areas are so large it never feels crowded. Multiple restaurants on-site give many dining options from moderate to more expensive. I would recommend a rental car for at least part of your stay to see some of the more outlying areas. Although you never need to leave the resort it would be a shame to be in this exotic locale and yet never see the surrounding sights.

Open-air dining in a fabulous, palapa-roofed, romantic setting overlooking downtown Acapulco. Wonderful service, a fixed price menu, and an awesome setting make this a great value for romantic dining. The food was excellent, Continental with a fresh Mexican twist in sauces and accompaniments. Balcony setting with candlelight and soft music complete the evening dining experience.

Playa Pie de la Cuesta

Set apart from Acapulco and an easy but winding road north of the city. Very quiet and laid back, just the place to get away from it all for a day and feel a little of the real Mexico. The open ocean with swells is on one side and a fresh water lagoon with fishing, waterskiing, jetskiing, or birdwatching is on the other side of a narrow strip of land with the road in the middle. We had a wonderful garlic shrimp dinner, numerous Coco Locos and cervesas, all fully set up with tablecloth on our dining table out on the beach in front of the Tres Marias and it was under $50US for all day. Fabulous food, fabulous service, and the most wonderful sunset veiw of our entire time in Acapulco!

In our travels to Mexico so many people we have talked to are intimidated about driving in Mexico. I think they really miss out on seeing the "real Mexico" when they allow their fears to inhibit them from getting out and exploring a little.

Yes, it is a different style of driving, and the circle plazas make it interesting to find your turn-off, but it's all part of the fun. We have gone off into little mountain towns where we were the only Americans there and NO ONE spoke English, and these have been some of our best times of the vacation. Mexicans are unfailingly courteous and generous in sharing their country with visitors. If you make the effort to visit with them they are very interested and curious about us and our lives as well. Often they will offer to cook a meal for you right in their home if no restaurants are available. These are often the best meals of our vacation and the most memorable.

Get out and explore and have fun. Rent a car and see the sights. Get off the beaten path and live a little. Use common sense, try not to drive an unknown road after dark, and you will be fine. Mexico actually feels safer than many American cities.
