Scorching Sydney

A December 2003 trip to Sydney by kate b

In a city with so many famous features, it was hard not to bump into a landmark, or park, or museum, beach, bar, pub, sports venue, etc.

Overview

Clearly the opera house is first on most people's itinerary, and it is truly amazing. Sydney Harbour Bridge provides an amazing backdrop, and around the harbour itself there is always some sort of street entertainment, and some fantastic ice cream shops - you have been warned! Similarly, a trip to Sydney isn't complete without a visit to at least one of its easily accessible beaches. Manly, a short ferry away (Pier 3), is beautiful. Attracting a mixed crowd, it's all very relaxed, though those of you feeling a little more energetic could take part in a spot of beach volleyball. The infamous Bondi is slightly smaller, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character. With a backdrop of bars, cafes, and restaurants, it's a great place to people-watch and check out some of the sports-mad Aussies.

Quick Tips:

If you are under 26 and want to catch a show at the opera house, check for cheap tickets on Mondays. They also sell off standing tickets on the day of performances. See, no excuses!

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is easy, and the city is simple to navigate, but at the same time, transport is clean and effective. The ferry to Manly will give you a fantastic view of the harbour, for that postcard photo!

Attraction

If you are a backpacker on a budget, but still want to sample Sydney's nightlife, the ScuBar on a Monday night is a must. Free entry, and $2.50 champagne and wine after 8pm - what more could you ask? "Crab racing!" I hear you cry. Well, they have that too. A little strange, I have to admit, but it's free to bet on a crab, and the prizes are pretty good. Music is a mixed bag, guaranteed to get you dancing. Good times all round!!!
