Unseen Alaska

A June 1999 trip to Unalakleet by jeckels

Not everyone sees the true native Alaska up close. I had the opportunity to do so, living there in an Eskimo village for 13 years.

Overview

The main source of income, as well as pleasure, lies in the land itself. The subsistence lifestyle is hard work, but very rewarding. This historical lifestyle allows for unlimited outdoor activities, as well as a deep feeling of connection to the land itself.

Quick Tips:

The only way in or out is by aircraft, so plan early. The highlight of the trip will most likely be a trip up the Unalakleet River - beautiful mountain views and excellent fishing. Ask most anyone in town, and they will be able to direct you to fishing charters or tours.

Best Way To Get Around:

The village is a bit small (only 1000 or so inhabitants), so walking is the easiest way to get around. Bicycling is also very popular, and you can get from one side of town to the other in about 7 minutes.
