Overview

Visiting the multiple churches in Vienna is a great way to get a feel for the majesty and power of the Hapsburg empire. However, after tiring of "high baroque" style, Stephansdom in the main square is a refreshing look at Austrian Gothic architechture. Also, a visit to the royal crypt is a great history lesson for all. Street vendors selling roasted chestnuts and British-style "chips" abound in the main squares and are a must to try.

Quick Tips:

Although Belgian chocolate is still superior in quality, be sure to sample the fine chocolates available in Vienna. Steer clear of the mediocre "Mostly Mozart" chocolate stores (although the quick-grab packages make great souvenirs for bringing home).

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking, of course, is the best way to see any city. Vienna has a nice subway system allowing access to inner-circle destinations as well as surrounding suburbs. Strangely enough, the subway operates on the "honor system," and, although somewhat unethical, we purchased one ticket and used it for days. There is a fine, I understand, if an inspector asks for your ticket and you dont have one. Risk!
A rather plain-looking building housing local apartments on the first through 7th floors. Pension reception is on 8th floor, and English is spoken well.

Our room (#10) was very clean, with two twin beds, small couch/table area, huge walk-in closet, modern bathroom, and a nice view toward Stephansdom.

Breakfast (Austrian Contintental), from 7-10 daily in separate breakfast room, was included in the cost. Reception was able to act as concierge with taxis, tickets, etc.

GREAT LOCATION--near Schwendenplatz U-Bahn (subway). Walking distance to main square and most sights within the old-town district as well as many small, wonderful Vienna dining establishments and beer halls.
