My wife and I, having our share of stress on a daily basis, decided to slip away for a long weekend. Since we were time-constrained and looking to travel to a place we had never been to before, we picked Cancun, Mexico.
I was, at first, not too excited about the prospect, fearing a retaliatory strike of Montezuma's Revenge, but I cautiously agreed. We decided on the Sun Palace, an all-inclusive resort/hotel.
Upon our arrival at the Sun Palace, we were greeted warmly by the staff. They could not do too much for us!
We settled into our room, and were awestruck by the view and even more so by the fully stocked mini-fridge, which contained free soda, beer, and bottled water.
We were told about the other five hotels that belonged to the Palace Resort network and how we could visit them anytime and use their facilities, a yellow wristband being our ticket.
We decided to stay at the Sun Palace for most of the trip, but we did make side trips to check out the two Palace resorts that were close enough to get to by bus (the Beach Palace and the Cancun Palace).
The Beach Palace had more people staying there and a great many more activities. The Cancun Palace seemed to be geared more for families with young children.
The general manager of the Sun Palace (Pablo Winkler) stopped by at least twice to say hello to the guests and to ask them if everything was satisfactory.
One side note - getting around the "Hotel Zone" is easy and cheap.
The public bus lines that run up and down the Boulevard can take you into downtown and to any hotel on the strip. It costs 12 pesos per person round-trip (about $1.20 in U.S. dollars). The bus drivers can make change for you. Try and exchange some American cash for pesos and avoid hassles. Most shops will take U.S. dollars, but will give you change in Mexican money.
