Staying in West Cork

A travel journal to Cork by KoZeN

Concentrating on hotels in the beautiful Skibereen area of West Cork.

The main attraction to West Cork is the scenery. This area has spectacular views, world class restaurants, and possibly the most welcoming and genuine locals in the world!

Quick Tips:

Take time out to visit Schull (roughly 70 miles from Cork City), which is approx. 2 hours on a bus. Bus fares from Cork to Skibereen cost between E12 and E15 and the buses are surprisingly comfortable.

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transport is pretty efficient, although a car is definitely recomended if you want to go sightseeing. Public roads around West Cork have just been refurbished so a comfortable, smooth journey is possible!

Hotel | "The Eldon Hotel"

For a two-star hotel, I was astounded. The accommodations are a little small but very comfortable. The Eldon is also the last place Irish legend Michael Collins slept before being killed in an ambush the following day, and the bar has tastefully dedicated its theme towards Michael Collins' career.

The hotel has its own bar called The Porch and a restaurant called Gallaghers. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is impeccably clean and even with a bar downstairs, the rooms are surprisingly quiet. It's located in the town center, so it's only walking distance from whatever facility or amenity you desire.

Gallaghers is simply outstanding. I couldn't believe I came across this phenomenal find in such a small town! The lay out is simple and relaxed, and if it's a warm day you can eat outside in the hotel's secluded, breathtaking private garden.

Seafood is a specialty but it has a large variety to cater to all tastes. I had a HUGE steak with a beautiful pavalova for dessert. The chef (whose name escapes me) is renowned throughout West Cork and deservedly so. Gallaghers has won so many awards for its cuisine, and you can see these awards all around the entrance to the restaurant. It is well worth a visit and it won't break the bank!

VodoosBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Firstly, Vodoos nightclub has the potential to be outstanding. Unfortunately this is possibly the worst club I have ever been to. The layout of the club is simple--downstairs is for those looking for a relaxed, comfortable night out, upstairs is for those who want to take their life into their own hands! Vodoos is the only club around for miles and EVERYONE from Skibereen goes there because at that time of night there is nowhere else to go.

When we went into this club for the first time the first thing I noticed was a distinct smell of feet! The bar is way too small and there are only two barmaids serving up to 500 people! The music is just woeful and the club in general doesn't appear to have been cleaned in months. This wasn't a once off, I went a few times for the lack of anything better to do and it was the same every night.
