First Day with Collin my new friend
The best thing to do in Sydney is to walk and explore the many side streets with their open air cafes and Victorian architecture. The flowers in the spring are bright and fresh and the sky is so blue. There is a mixture of old and new. The coffee is amazing and the people are friendly and always ready to help you. I love the fresh scent of the sea water and the freshness of the colors on the buildings.

Quick Tips:

Just walk until you have soaked up all the ambience.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can catch a bus if you want, but walking beats all. You miss too much detail in a car or bus.

Cafe Liverpool Street
Bills Cafe has wonderful food. Any little cafe has great coffee and lots of people-watching. You can stop at any of the places for a taste of Sydney. The colors of the walls and quaint way of serving all food is unlike North America. Quite European without the airs.

the rocks at Maroubra
We parked the car at Maroubra Beach and entered a path at the end of the parking lot that said no trespassing to walk along the heath. It is one of the few remaining untouched areas in Sydney. It was early morning and we walked up the hills to the sandstone rocks and walked to the top. There were old WW11 bunkers still intact and the wildflowers growing around the pools of water on the rocks were spectacular. Birds were singing and the wind from the ocean was warm and inviting. All this for no money. The sandstone formations and the cliffs were unbelievably beautiful. When you looked down there were men fly fishing and boats with divers. The waves crashed on the rocks and the sounds in the silence were unreal as you are still in the city. There were bird watchers coming up the hills when we were going back down. What a morning walk!

Looking Back at Maroubra Beach
Magnificent view of the city walking back. Sandy paths, flowers, and sea grasses everywhere. Birds singing and waves crashing. The rocks look like art work and the levels of sandstone form natural stairs.

The gardens
When you walk through any entrance, you can take paths to different floral areas. The gardens overlook the harbor and the breeze is wonderful. You can take a mini tram or train through the gardens if you don't want to walk. There are benches everywhere to rest if you tire out. The smells are wonderful from eucalyptus trees to flowering bushes of all kinds. The fruit bats hang from the trees in full view and the birds are everywhere as well as little lizards if you really watch. You can watch the tall ships and all the activity in the harbor. You can see the opera house, the harbor bridge, and it is in the middle of the city. Don't miss it no matter when you are there.

Victorian
The many faces of the houses of Sydney. The Victorian, the old, the new, and the ones in need of repair all add to the ambience of Sydney. The big skyscrapers with old houses tucked under them. Real estate is at a premium and the people don't destroy, but refurbish. It is a marvellous city to see them all . . . Here are a few.

Story/Tip

Opera house
Sydney Opera House is a symbol of Australia and speaks for itself in these pictures. It is magnificent to see and every angle is a different shape. It is world-renowned and is a must-see when wandering around Sydney.
