Houston is a veritable cornucopia of things to do for all sorts and all ages of people. I lived there for several years, and have been back many times since. My suggestions include going on the NASA tour - it's only about a forty minute drive from downtown , and a very interesting and informative tour, great for both kids and adults. The museums in Houston are amazing, with everything from art galleries to history and science.
For the sightseers, I also suggest the San Jacinto Monument and the WW11 battleship found outside of town. Wherever you stay, there will be brochures suggesting places to go and sights to see.
If you are up to day trips, Galveston is wonderful with it's boardwalk, beaches, neat shops, and the Moody Gardens.
Quick Tips:
The nightlife is great in Houston, with everything from nightclubs to comedy clubs, to live music, opera, ballet, and theatre.
If I was to rate Houston for the variety of things it has to offer every kind of person, I would give it a 10 out of 10.
My biggest tips are to figure out the night before what you want to do the next day, because there is so much to do, and the days are so full, that if you waste half a morning trying to decide, you'll never get to catch that time up.
Another tip I have is to use your maps. Houston has a great highway and freeway system - if you know it. It can be really confusing and frustrating if you don't.
Best Way To Get Around:
I definitely suggest renting a car and getting maps if you want to go sightseeing around the area. The bus service in Houston is great, but somewhat confusing if you are new to it, and you may end up going around in circles for hours if you end up on the wrong bus. Read Less
