Hua Hin

An August 2003 trip to Hua Hin by HairyD

Hua Hin is not a normal backpacker destination -- but I'm not a backpacker, I suppose.

Overview

Watch the richer people coming out of the 5-star hotels and then consider that you have a swimming pool at your 375bt hotel.

Quick Tips:

Eat at the night market, and then check out the warships moored off the coast decorated with lights like luxury liners.

Best Way To Get Around:

Hotel

This is a sweet hotel with a little garden in a quiet Soi close to the beach. My room was small, but very clean with a fan and TV (air-conditioning available). Breakfast is included in the price of 475bt, but it was only toast and tea (but I can drink A LOT of tea). Cockerels are kept in the car park, but must be really well trained because they didn't wake me up in the morning. Very close to the main bar strip.

Ban Somboon
Soi Kasem Samphan Hua Hin, Thailand

We chanced upon this hotel simply because I was curious about the price. At 375bt a night, that's got to be good value for a hotel with a pool. The double room was adequate with fan and a big bed. The pool is close to the entrance and is a simple rectangle with a tiny bit of space for a few recliners. In August, there were only maybe 4-8 of us around the pool. When the hotel is busy, there would be no chance of sitting down.

Very close to the bus stop for air-conditioning to Bangkok and close to the excellent night market.

Considering the prices of some of the noisy, dark, tatty rooms that I saw, this has to be good value.

Night MarketBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

When you see the night market, you will be spoilt for choice. I ate at a different place every day and was never disappointed. As well as sit down meals, you can get any number of little snacks as well. Remember that the beer at the stalls is cheaper than any of the bars in town and there are few pleasures that surpass hot curry and cold beer.

Bars & PubsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Bars everywhere"

Hua Hin is a true holiday town in the sense that it caters for people determined to drink cold beer, play pool, and chat up local women in one of the many bars around the central area of town. Some of the bars look seedy while some of them appear quite nice. I was surprised by how many of the bars were empty, but then I should return in peak season I suppose. Hua Hin seems to attract more than its fair share of single, middle aged-to old, fat westerners intent on getting themselves a Thai partner from one of these bars.

Bars & Pubs
Throughout Hua Hin Hua Hin, Thailand

I arrived on the 4am train from Trang and so I saw Hua Hin at its most tranquil. I sat on the beach watching the sunrise until 7ish, then went to find a room. It was all very pleasant.

Getting to Bangkok couldn't be easier. Air-conditioned buses go from near the night market every half hour for the three-hour trip to the southern bus terminal. Tip: as you arrive in Bangkok, you pass the southern bus terminal on the other side of the road before turning back to come through the back streets. If you get off the bus before it leaves the main road and swings back to the station, you can get a taxi from there instead of wasting time and money going back out to the terminal.
