Holland Has Islands?

A September 2002 trip to Ameland by xphile1067

I was visiting the mainland of Holland, when my friend said, "Hey, let's go to Ameland!" A northern island, one of five Holland owns, but not touristy!

My favorite part of this trip, sans the lack of people, was renting a bicycle and cycling around the island. There are only four villages; Ballum, Hollum, and Nes are the biggest. Nes dates back to the 18th century, as does most of the island. The VVV offers tours and hikes, and you can even rent a boat. If you rent a bicycle in Nes, you can follow a trail around the island, mainly passing the beach. Check out Ballum cemetery and the red-and-white lighthouse in Hollum.

Quick Tips:

The ferry departs from Holwerd on the mainland to Nes. There is usually, in good weather, a ferry every 2 hours, and it takes about 45 minutes. There are more ferries during busier times, usually during summer. The weather and sea dictate the schedule for the ferries. Most people on the island are nice. It is also a school-field-trip destination for Germans, so it can get crowded.

Best Way To Get Around:

Best way to get around is walking. The island is not that big, but you can rent a bike and cycle everywhere. The amount of cars allowed on the island is limited, so it's best to leave your car in the ferry parking lot.
You have very little choice in places to stay. This hotel is nice and clean, but does have thin walls. Make note: if you are booking a double, the price that will be quoted to you is EACH! To get to the hotel, you can either walk, take a cab, or take the local bus from the ferry station.

Restaurant

Although we weren't there all that long, this restaurant has a nice atmosphere and a good menu, with many dishes under 10 euros. The building it's in is from 1772, and it's very popular with the locals. Then again, since the island is so small, most places that serve food are popular with the locals!
