My favorite part of this trip, sans the lack of people, was renting a bicycle and cycling around the island. There are only four villages; Ballum, Hollum, and Nes are the biggest. Nes dates back to the 18th century, as does most of the island. The VVV offers tours and hikes, and you can even rent a boat. If you rent a bicycle in Nes, you can follow a trail around the island, mainly passing the beach. Check out Ballum cemetery and the red-and-white lighthouse in Hollum.Quick Tips: The ferry departs from Holwerd on the mainland to Nes. Although we weren't there all that long, this restaurant has a nice atmosphere and a good menu, with many dishes under 10 euros. The building it's in is from 1772, and it's very popular with the locals. Then again, since the island is so small, most places that serve food are popular with the locals!
