The Big Easy

An October 2003 trip to New Orleans by grubado

Astor Crowne PlazaMore Photos

This is a great city. We stayed on the corner of Bourbon and Canal Street in the Crowne Astor Hotel. We toured the French Quarter. I recommend the horsedrawn carriage rides for info. Also you have to try a muffaletta sandwich and a po boy sandwich while visiting!

The Big EasyBest of IgoUgo

Overview

The best things to see and do are to visit Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the Garden District, ride the oldest working trolleys in the United States, take a Mississippi Cruise on the Natchez, visit Harrah's Casino, eat at the old Crescent City Brewery, and have a beignet and a cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde, where the French first introduced coffee in the United States.

Quick Tips:

You have to take a walk on Bourbon Street. Be ready to see it all and be ready to catch some beads! The Blues Company bar on Bourbon Street has excellent live blues music.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around is by walking. There are trolleys which you can ride for .25 per passenger which will take you from the French Quarter to downtown New Orleans, where the D-Day Museum is located and to the Garden District. Taxi cabs cost the same as shuttles here averaging per person to ride one way from the airport to your hotel.

Great local place to check out while you are in New Orleans. You can order oysters on the halfshell, which is their big seller. I tried the shrimp Po Boy, which is a local favorite. It was excellent. You will find that New Orleans can take any meat and make it into a delicious Po Boy sandwich. Good bang for the buck!

Cafe Du MondeBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This is an open air cafe where the menu consists of beignets (French doughnuts dipped in powder sugar) and cafe au lait (excellent coffee). This is a great place to rest while overlooking Jackson Square with all the artists, mimes, and horsedrawn carriage rides.

Excellent place to sit on the outdoor balcony and enjoy delicious foods. We had the filet mignon, which was excellent. Decatur has a tourist info center that sells tours, etc--ask them if they have a coupon to this restaurant. The lady in the info center had buy one entree, get one free, which saved us about $30!

This is a working brewery where you can order their own brewed beers if you so desire. I didn't try them, but the other patrons seemed pleased with their beers.
