An October 2003 trip to Chicago by Nereen

Chicago is one of the best cities ever to visit. It is just so full of fun and excitement. We took the skyline drive, which was absolutely magnificent.

Embassy Suites Chicago - DowntownBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Embassy Suites Downtown"

Excellent, typical five-star accommodation. They meet and greet you at the door, and bell boy takes your luggage up to your room. Great dining area and waiting area.

All accommodations includes a full American breakfast including cereal, bacon, eggs, juices, and muffins.

They have a gift shop downstairs where you could buy souvenirs and just everyday needs like toiletries, chips, and candy.

Standing 17 stories high it's a great location as it is only two blocks away from Navy Pier and five blocks away from the water tower.

Restaurant | "Adoba Restuarant"

Superb dining experience. As I am a full vegetarian, I was really worried that I wouldn't have enough options, but at the Adoba they went out of their way for me. We started of with nachos and guacamole, and then we orderd the main course of a wild mushroom and bean dinner served with tortillas. Dessert was even better; we had Mexican ice cream covered with coconut. Amazing.

If you are in the mood for fast, and I mean fast food, this is the place. You place your order and walk through and your food is ready in literally two minutes. They have the rolls and burger buns all cut up already, and if you order a burger they just fry it in slam it into the bun, then there is a separate area where you go and add the onions, mustard, and ketchup. The only thing they do not have is fries, and the only item for vegetarians is the grilled cheese sandwich.

Chicago Waterworks Visitors CenterBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Waterbend Cruises"

This was very interesting. I gained a whole lot of knowledge on this magnificent city. I saw lots of historical buildings and the tour guide explained everything in detail, about when it was built and who built it. What was really fascinating is that the bridges open and close every time a boat that can not fit through comes by, so the traffic is brought to a halt and the bridge opens up, then the boat passes through, and then closes again, and the traffic starts to flow through. This is a delay of about 15 minutes.

Attraction | "Lion King production"

If you thought the animated version was good, this is mindblowing. The best Broadway production ever. The costumes were really good and the person who made the costumes is an award-winning designer. It is well worth the money paid.

Our first stop was Navy Pier, Chicago’s playground. Here you have a number of restaurants, games, fun rides, and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. There is also a trolley that takes you to and from downtown Chicago to Navy Pier free of charge and this runs every half an hour. We explored the city and shopped at the Water Tower, a huge shopping mall. At 5pm, our group met at the Embassy Suites Lakefront, checked in, freshened up, and went to the north side of Chicago for dinner. Read dining entry for our superb restaurant. After dinner, a colleague and myself attended the Lion King production at the Palace Theatre. That was really outstanding. The best production I have ever seen and the costume were brilliant. The next day we decided to book and river and lake cruise. The cruise boat company we used was Waterbend Cruises and they can be booked at the information desk at the hotel. The trip was an hour and a half and the tour guide explained to us the history of Chicago. Excellent value for just $16. After that, we shopped a little and then we had to check out at 3pm. From there, we went to Sears Tower, the third tallest building in the world (113 floors).
