I am a pretty laid back guy, and not a New York Native. I recommend relaxing things to do in NYC

finding the things to do that are away from the masses, and then getting back into the hustle and bustle of the city.

Quick Tips:

don't be afraid to ask New Yorkers for suggestions. They are friendly people. When they see you've come from out of town, they'll be especially helpful.

Best Way To Get Around:

The subway is definitely the best way to get around.

Le Parker Meridien New YorkBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Hotel Parker Meridien"

I stayed in this hotel for a week when I first moved to NYC. (Note: If my company hadn't paid for it, I would not have!) It's not as big as the Marriot Marquis or Hilton, but that's why I like it so much. This place is full of French luxury and elegance. The rooms are elegantly designed and decorated, it will give your New York experience a surprisingly serene side. The hotel is farther away from the madness of Times square- yet it is just a block or two away from Carnegie Hall. The atrium is a superb place to sit and enjoy a drink. Norma's, the resturaunt downstairs, has a great breakfast. And Seppi's is a classic French Bistro with superb French dining.

Grand Hyatt New YorkBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Grand Hyatt"

I stayed this hotel one weekend when I came to NYC for an interview. (Note: I would not have stayed here if my company wasn''t paying for it). It''s a huge hotel with a spacious and elegant lobby, considering the number of tourists who are staying there. It is not in the middle of Times Square activity, but only about 5 streets away. It is most convenient to the subways at Grand Central and shopping on fifth avenue.

Hotel GorhamBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Gorham Hotel"

I was looking for a weekend escape from my small New York City apartment, and the Gorham Hotel offered a nice getaway.

Here’s what I really enjoyed about the Gorham.

The Gorham is in a great location. It’s located at 136 West 55th, between 6th and 7th Avenues. It’s only minutes away from Central Park, Times Square, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We were greeted with great service. From the friendly staff to the complimentary fruit and daily newspapers, we felt truly welcomed into the hotel. Needless to say, I think this would be a pleasant surprise for tourists coming to New York City.

The rooms also offered some nice amenities that could make a long stay enjoyable. Free internet access in the lobby and room (if you have a laptop for your room) prevents one from having to hunt for an internet cafe. I loved that feature. A room refrigerator lets you store food and drinks to take when exploring the city. Also, a plush Gorham Hotel robe in the room was a nice touch.

Another great idea that the hotel had was to have agreements with local restaurants and merchants. Hotel guests can receive such things as complimentary desserts from local restaurants and free chocolates from a candy store.

However, the hotel was not perfect. The water pressure was extremely low in the shower, which prevented us from unwinding with a nice shower after a long day. The hotel has established a "Breakfast Room" which is a bit tacky. It is literally a bedroom that has been emptied out with the door propped open. Considering the almost infinite restaurant options in New York City, I’d be hard pressed to find a good reason to have breakfast there. Yes, the bathroom is still there. Also, the small, limited exercise room leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall, we had an enjoyable stay at the Gorham Hotel and would recommend it for a nice stay in New York City. Just don’t plan on working out and having breakfast there.

Room rates range from about $170-$230, while the suite rates range from $180-$260. You can find more information about the Gorham Hotel at www.gorhamhotel.com

Gotham Bar & GrillBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Gotham Bar and Grill"

Fried Dumpling
This is one of the first class resturaunts in New York, and a favorite since it opened about 5 years ago. The dining room is classily decorated- not dark and mysterious like a night club. On weekends you'll find many families and larger parties. It's not a place for a first date, but more of a place for your parent's birthday or to surprise someone very special. I have been twice, and I have been impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. The food is not overly elaborate- mostly classic dishes prepared with quality and care. The best things on the menu: Seafood salad, Squab as main entry, Grilled New York Steak, Gotham Chocolate Cake, Rasberry Tart for dessert.

MarktBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

For an excellent, authentic Belgian food experience in the heart of the increasingly trendy meat-packing district of Manhattan, try Markt.

I liked the stylish, dark wood paneled bistro and bar atmosphere that is alive and festive.

The best thing on the menu for me was the mussels steamed in beer and the frites (french fries), but there are traditional Belgian steaks, seafood, and stews. The warm chocolate torte is a superb dessert. Try going early (before 6:30) to avoid crowds.

Kum Gang SanBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This lively, contemporory, and popular Korean resturaunt is a good place to go in Koreatown. It's near the Macy's herald square and Madison Square Garden, and is open as late as 1:00 AM!

The specialties here are Korean Barbeque and many traditional Korean dishes like Bi Bam Bap, a rice casserole cooked in a steaming iron pot.

Go with a group so you can try many dishes, and have the barbeque that is cooked on the grill in the middle of the table!

Peking Duck HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Peking Duck is a Chinese specialty, and this is a great place to go for a special treat. Peking duck is a Chinese delicacy where thin slices of crispy roast duck are eaten by wrapping them in a thin crepe with duck sauce.

This is a newly remodeled resturaunt that is more fashionable and modern in appearance than most Chinatown favorites. I would also recommend House Made noodles and string beans.

Virgil's Real BBQBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Virgil's BBQ"

This is my favorite BBQ restaurant in Manhattan. It's a large a lively two-story restaurant, full of nationwide BBQ artifacts and memorabilia from America's best barbeque joints. There is also a large bar area where people can eat, drink, and watch sports on TV. This meat-eatery haven is a welcome escape just next to the Time Square madness. I like the pulled pork sandwiches, biscuits, cornbread, and also the ribs, but they also have a variety of seafood, burgers, and entrées like Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak.

My friend Vince, who knows his Italian food, took me to this restaurant, and he said he's been going to this place for years. I rarely eat on the far West side, and this place is a good find. With its faux-wood paneling, generic paintings, photos of outdated celebrities with the owners, this place seems like a neighborhood favorite from the Sopranos TV show.
There is a full menu of soups, pizzas, pastas, and entrees. The food tastes great and the prices are very reasonable. I had the Ziti al Forno ($8.95) and it tasted fresh with nicely blended cheeses and it was a healthy-sized serving.

LotusBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Lotus is a remarkable dining experience because it immerses you in a wonderfully cool setting with a DJ mixing lounge-club-dance music, beautiful people, a darkened, ultra-trendy space, and truly delicious food. It's the first fine dining experience I've ever had where a nicely dressed bouncer behind a red velvet rope checks for your name on the reservation list, whispers into a hidden microphone, and then permits your entry.

Our late dinner reservation (11:00 PM) was about the time that Lotus transforms into a very trendy nightclub. I must admit this trendy treatment turned me off slightly, but we were welcomed warmly by the host and seated in a comfortable corner in the main dining room, which turns into a bar/lounge after 11:30 PM.

The food was fantastic and well-prepared, and far better than I expected from this hotspot. I enjoyed a delicious appetizer of tuna shashimi prepared four different ways, and for the main course, I had a fresh lobster cassoulet with sweet spring vegetables in a slightly spicy broth that still makes my mouth water. Ally had a great squab appetizer and a lamb dish that was one of the best I had ever tasted. Dessert was a great chocolate pyramid with a dark chocolate exterior and hazelbut-chocolate mixture on the inside. The dinner was a fixed-priced menu at $55 per person.

All the while while we enjoyed great food, trendy club music played in the background and the crowd at the bar buzzed louder, which made it a bit tough to have an intimate conversation, but it made the dinner both delicious and sexy, which doesn't happen often (even in New York!).

Blue HillBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Here is a new restaurant on a quiet street in the West Village that's a relaxing meal. It's got simple but very tasty food in an unpretentious atmosphere with friendly service. I recommend going later because the crowd (and noise) dims down. It's pretty relaxing late in the evening (that's 10:00 PM or later) and it's open until 11:00 PM. I recommend the poached duck and the braised cod. Both light yet tasty. I really enjoyed the rice pudding dessert and the chocolate bread pudding is also a sweet and smooth dessert.

Krispy KremeBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The Krispy Kreme donut shop is a gift given to New Yorkers from the South. These donuts are amazing because they are simple, sweet, and often right out of the conveyor belt oven.

A simple, clean store concept- just the donuts and some coffee is allyou need to start the morning happy. I look forward to them every Friday, and eat about 6 of them on my way back to work. It's a refreshing find for NYC.

Full Monty (The Show)Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Full Monty"

I was especially excited to see this Broadway muscial version of The Full Month because I really enjoyed the movie. The movie was hilarious because the concept of 5 out-of-work losers forming a strip dance routine was so original and the setting of rural England was also unexpected.

This Muscial Version of the The Full Monty takes the setting to Buffalo, New York, but the good-natured humor and entertaining interactions of the misguided strippers remains.

From a muscial standpoint, there aren't a lot of very memorable songs, while the movie soundtrack is full of 70's classics like "You Sexy Thing" and "Moving on Up." The are several funny songs in the musical and the singing is general good, but you won't leave humming them in your head.

The Full Monty is a very fun and playful musical though not really appropriate for little kids. You definitely won't be bored with this one, as the story closely follows the funniest scenes of the movie version. I would recommend it, especially if you are generally not into more serious type of muscial theater.

You can play basketball here on one of the 4 courts in the schoolyard. It is surprisingly empty, considering the quality of the courts. There's one full court there, and about 3 half courts. The courts are in good condition, but of course there are no nets on the rims. There is also a playground which is very popular with the local kids.

Manitoba'sBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

I had the urge to listen to live country music in New York City, so I went to hear some bands play at Manitoba's on a Saturday night. It's a small place, bigger than a hole in the wall but smaller than a real music place. Like most lower east side places, lots of the young patrons had tatoos and bohemian dress. But a nice crowd that really was into the music. You can hear East Village local musicians like Tom Clark playing country cover tunes like 'Playing with the Queen of Hearts' and Buddy Holly covers. Pretty cheap beer and a 1980's vintage Missile Command video game in the basement. I think it still only cost a quarter.

Hidden Empire State
It's easy to get caught up in the noise and activity that surrounds you in New York, but there are exceptional images to take home with you just about everywhere you go.

Make sure you take the time to appreciate the exceptional views and photos you can take from quiet parks, tops of skyscrapers, or out a taxi window. I like to take photos in Central Park because the backdrop of the city amongst the trees and grass is such a nice contrast and a view unlike anywhere else in the world. The tops of skyscrapers like the Empire State Building also make for memorable city views.

Below are some photos that I've taken in New York.
