The real Dominican Republic

An October 2003 trip to Santo Domingo by vailkay

What a beautiful place. The Acuarium resort was delightful. It was slow season so my grandchildren often had the pool to themselves. The white sand beach at Boca Chica is safe and fun. The mountains are lush and green. Speaking Spanish or knowing a local resident helps. Definitely recommend.

Hotel

This was such a surprise. The pictures did not do this resort justice. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the buildings are beautiful. I had a great room with a living/dining area, separate kitchen and bedroom area, and nice bathroom. The Jacuzzi and pool are well maintained and staff is friendly and professional. Everything you need is close by.

Attraction

The shuttle from the Acuarium Resort takes you to this white sand beach with clear blue water. Umbrella covered tables provide a respite from the sun. Vendors take your food order and deliver it. The water is shallow for a mile out, so it's excellent for swimming. There is a thatched hut bar, and recreational toys for rent. AWESOME!

Attraction

I got the best deal on Cohiba and Macanudo cigars. $25 for a box of 25. It helped that my son-in-law plays baseball and grew up in the Dominican Republic, but there are awesome deals. Avoid the tourist cigar shops and hit some of the smaller ones. Paintings are fresh and fun. This is my second time here and I have bought a painting each time. Remember to bargain!
