Following an enjoyable bus journey from Cairns to just north of Port Douglas, we boarded the huge twin-hulled Quicksilver ferry, which was to take us to our ultimate destination--the Agincourt, or Outer Reef. Once there we could have either scuba dived, snorkeled, or just observed the wonders of the reef from a "submarine" permanently moored on the reef.
We chose to snorkel and spent an hour paddling around the surface in total awe of the reef below. It was a very enlightening experience as the fish did not seem to be frightened of us. An outstretched hand was some kind of plaything to them and not an implement of impending danger. The fish had an almost childlike curiosity and natural sense of play. Many of the fish allowed us to very gently stroke them; something I thought was impossible with a wild animal!
The hour passed very quickly and we were very reluctant to leave the water now that we had made so many new friends. My wife and I decided that next time we would "take the plunge" and scuba dive on the reef!
Quick Tips:
A buffet lunch is included with this daytrip, so don't fill up too much at breakfast! If you're not a strong swimmer but would still like to have a go at snorkeling, then you can by first donning one of the free of charge lifejackets. It's an ideal way of overcoming any worries you may have about swimming in the sea.
Best Way To Get Around:
The journey from our accommodation in Cairns to the Quicksilver departure point, was by airconditioned coach which took us via the resort town of Port Douglas. This gave us a good opportunity to see the beachside hotels and resorts of this popular holiday destination.
The Quicksilver Wave-piercing catamaran has two hulls, which ensures a very smooth ride in most conditions.
