A day in Guangzhou

A July 2003 trip to Guangzhou by jimmyOne

Guangzhou was an hours train ride fron Hong Kong and was a relaxing step down from the frenzy of HK. An ideal way to see some of mainland China if you are staying in HK.

Temple of Six Banyan Trees
The 9-storey pagoda at the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees is an ideal way to see a traditional pagoda and a Buddhist temple. You can (if not afraid of heights!) climb up the pagoda.

The traditional markets are a chance to see (and smell) spices, vegetables, and (be warned) all sorts of animals from chickens to baby turtles and scorpions.

The Dr Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall is a memorial to . . . (guess), who is known as the founder of communist China. It's a traditional style, but is actually quite modern, and houses an auditorium.

Quick Tips:

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees isn't too busy, but the pagoda is only narrow, so try and visit at the beginning and end of the day when it's quieter.

Hotel

View from hotel
A good, modern four-star hotel, although nothing off the beaten track. Pool, gym, rooftop restaurant, and bar. Higher rates during Guangzhou Trade fairs (April 14-30 and Oct 14-30).

Flower Pagoda
The temple was built in the 6th century AD, although destroyed by fire in the 10th century. The main attraction is the 60m high, 9-storey "Flower Pagoda", which you can climb. The first storey is a sensible height, but the ceiling gets lower with each level, so mind your head on the top floors! The pagoda is also surrounded by a Buddhist temple, which contains three bronze Buddha statues (10 tons each!) and is definitely worth visiting. The temple is not hugely busy, but the pagoda is quite narrow, so it is best to visit when it is quieter, at the beginning and end of the day.

Front of Hall
The hall was completed in 1931 to honour the first Provisional President of Communist China. The building is an octagonal structure built in traditional Chinese style and contains a 4700 seat auditorium for theatre performances.

The hall (built on the site of the building where Dr. Sun took power) is set in a small park, but is easily accesible.
