Weekend in Marco Island

An October 2003 trip to Marco Island by Brankatz

This weekend trip to Marco Island was our first, but not the last we will take. Plenty around the area to do. Close to Naples and the Everglade National Park. Great area for families, those that enjoy fishing and beaches, or just relaxing by the pool.

Fun in the pool
The highlights of the island for us was the beach, great shelling, and the resort we stayed at Marco Island Beach Resort was worth the price. Had a great time fishing the mangroves with my father. My son and wife enjoyed shelling on the beach. Whole family enjoyed miniature golf in Naples.

Quick Tips:

I would suggest booking local "backwater" fishing charter over deep sea fishing, more time to actually fish only took 30 minutes to get to good fishing grounds. Caught snook and mangrove snapper, and a couple of sea trout.

If you like to be in the center of the action, Naples is probably a better spot for you. Naples is around 20 minutes away from Marco Island, so if you like a more secluded beach, Marco Island is the ticket.

Best Way To Get Around:

You will need to rent a car unless you plan on spending all of your time at the resort. No real public transportation apparent. Grocery store was within a five minute drive along with a number of restaurants. Most major activities required a reasonable drive.

Best Things Nearby:
The beach was great for shelling and the water was a wonderful 82 degrees. The pool on site was where we spent most of our time because it was so close to the room.

Best Things About the Resort:
The view out of our second story balcony was the best thing about the resort -- it overlooked the beach and the gulf. We also greatly enjoyed the pool area and the gas grills located there.

Resort Experience:
A very quiet and relaxing location located directly on the beach, the rooms were well maintained and kept up to date. We stayed in a two-bedroom unit, which comfortably slept 5 of us. The common grounds were well manicured and cleanliness was obviously a priority. There were plenty of activities available, but, for the most part, we just chose to relax by the pool or walk on the beach and enjoy a real vacation.
