Driving through Brittany & Normandy

An August 2003 trip to Brittany by CharmynSmile

Driving through Brittany at your own pace, using the back roads and smaller roadways, is a great way to travel.

The following is a list of our must-sees on this trip. For me to capture my experiences in words would do you no justice, so look it up on the RG.

NORMANDY
1) Bayeux Tapestry: the commissioned 40-meter-long detailed pictoral account of William the Bastard's rise to William the Conqueror.
2) Mont-St-Michel: candlelit tour of the abbey

BRITTANY
3) Chapelle-Kermaria-an-Isquit: uncovered frescoes of the Dance of Death
4) Chateau de la Hunaudaye: castle built in the 13th century. (No guided tours in English. See it if you understand French.)

Quick Tips:

Some advice before going there:

1) Get yourself a Rough Guide before you go there! The Brittany & Normandy Rough Guide is an EXCELLENT travelling companion. The commentary was straightforward and gave overall great advice on things to see and places to stay.

2) Get a Michelin map at bookstore when you get to France. Compared to other maps, I found them to be very detailed.

3) Don't forget to say "Bonjour" before talking to anyone-- and that applies to everyone in France. The French are more helpful when you say that one word, maybe because not saying it is extremely impolite to them.

4) Get a room/campsite before you go sightseeing. This will deter any frustration and driving around really late at night, trying to find a place to sleep.

5) Take the guided tours. You don't necessarily need to rent audio guides, but do take the guided tours in your language. They really do help enhance your visit.

6) If you see something or read about something that may interest you, go see it.

Best Way To Get Around:

Consistent public transportation in Brittany, as mentioned in the RG, is pretty scarce, so we decided to drive through Normandy and Brittany. It was a wise decision.
