Door County Winter of 2003

Overview

Quote:
Hiking in Peninsula State Park is definitely recommended for the active individuals. For those who love to shop, check out Egg Harbor and Fish Creek in the summer time. And finally, the wineries are definitely fun to visit. Do not stop at all in the same day as there is a lot of wine that can be tasted. Orchard Country Winery has the best tour as they have lots of food/drink items to sample (don't forget to see how far you can spit that cherry pit). Simon Creek Winery is probably the most sophisticated winery. Visit the wineries in the summer too if you want the full tours.Quick Tips: -If you want to do the shopping and get the full experience of the wineries, visit during the late summ...Read More

Best Things Nearby:The small towns are one of the best things nearby (.e Fish Creek, Egg Harbor) however, in the winter lots of stores are closed for the season. In second place are the numerous areas to go hiking. One of the best and most popular (in the summer) is Peninsula State Park. Even though it's winter, a couple of the wineries are open year round (limited hours) for winetasting, call ahead.Best Things About the Resort:The timeshare has tons of daily indoor crafty activities one can participate in. They also offer free ski, snowshoe, and ice skate usage to use on their huge property. They give you a weeks worth of firewood for your fireplace. The pool, hot tub, a...Read More

The was a small coffee/sandwich shop in Egg Harbor that freshly prepares your sandwiches, makes fresh hot soup daily, prepares delicious baked goods, and serves a variety of other desserts. They serve several varieties of gourmet coffee and exotic teas (perfect for a cold winter day).

The place is only open limited hours during the winter; however, they feature live music on the weekends (solo or duets), poetry readings, and art demonstrations throughout the year. To top it all off, they are situated within a two story building that is filled with old and new books on every topic for your reading pleasure as you sit and enjoy the food/drink, music, and outstanding scenery of Green Bay.

The park is awesome for cross-country skiing. There are tons of different routes which are well maintained throughout the winter. Several routes are available for all levels. There are steep hills for the intermediate/expert levels, as well as bunny hills or no hills for the beginner. Ski rentals are available, just follow the signs when you get to the park entrance.

Atop of all the variety of routes, the scenery is magnificent in the winter. Fresh white snow that seems to go for miles and miles across Green Bay. The park is just a short drive from anywhere in Door County.

Simon Creek Vineyard and Winery

This is the newest and probably the most sophisticated of the wineries in Door County and the vicinity. Not to mention the people are extremely nice and they serve you their wine in real glass, not the little plastic shot glasses. At this winery I felt relaxed and not uncomfortable about asking to sample the same wine again. The winery tour was very informative and uses modern techniques/equipment in their brewing and bottling process. All of their equipment was shipped directly from France or Italy, and it looks extremely expensive. The winery also allows you to be in the bottling room when they are bottling wine to get the full experience. Maybe next year's tours will allow you to ru...Read More
