Christmas Holiday Island

A travel journal to Jekyll Island by leakyoleboat

A wonderland of seasonal sights, sounds, and lights bursts forth on Jekyll Island every Thanksgiving that lasts thru the Christmas Season. Not to be confused with the overdone light shows produced in some areas, this island event has successfully teamed its Christmas lighting with that old fashioned Christmas feeling of yesteryear.

Lighting of the lights is complimented with a lawn festival in the National Historic Landmark district complete with blown snow, sleigh rides, and caroling. The island is alive with traditional things to do; afternoon teas, progressive dinner, chefs’ demonstrations, dinner theatre, gingerbread festival, festival of the bells, numerous concerts and even bingo with Santa. Put this unique event at the top of your list.

Quick Tips:

Pay for the 4-day pass as you enter the island if you are staying 3 or more days. Most of the events are free to the public. Don't miss bingo every Monday with Santa at the Villas by the Sea -- it's free and a children's favorite. Stick around for the January 1st Bluegrass festival, 3 days of America's favorite grass roots music.

Best Way To Get Around:

Drive onto the island via a causeway connected to the mainland. The island is best known as a bicycle paradise with 50 miles of bike trails. All the hotels and businesses rent bikes including six-passenger surreys. There are no traffic lights because there is hardly any traffic, so walking is a leisurely pleasure. Tram tours run thru the historic district every day. There is a class A marina and two local airfields (one on the island), plus a regional airport on the mainland.
They have one, two, and three-bedroom condominiums complete with kitchens. These are privately held condominiums, so each one is decorated uniquely. Very upscale and very clean. It's located directly on the beach. This 17-acre site is sheltered by live oaks dripping with Spanish moss.

Attraction | "Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark"

The whole island blossoms into a wonderland of family things to do, a lot of them free to the public. If you are seeking a traditional Christmas experience, Jekyll Island is the choice for you. Unlike many locations, this island has been earmarked for preservation and most of the island is completely undeveloped. You will undoubtedly see deer leisurely crossing the lawns. A walk on the winter beach is a spectacular event in itself, however, Jekyll Island places hand-blown art treasures on the beaches daily for guests to seek out. These are signed and numbered pieces commissioned by the Island and yours to keep.

Jekyll Island Historic District
North Island Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island Has commissioned gorgeous glass one-of-a-kind fishing floats to be placed on the beach all winter long. These are numbered and signed pieces and are yours to keep should you happen to find one. This concept adds excitement to the whole concept of beachcombing. A winter walk on the beach is truly an exhilarating experience, but when you add this delicious incentive, it becomes irresistable.
