Lighting of the lights is complimented with a lawn festival in the National Historic Landmark district complete with blown snow, sleigh rides, and caroling. The island is alive with traditional things to do; afternoon teas, progressive dinner, chefs’ demonstrations, dinner theatre, gingerbread festival, festival of the bells, numerous concerts and even bingo with Santa. Put this unique event at the top of your list.
Quick Tips:
Pay for the 4-day pass as you enter the island if you are staying 3 or more days. Most of the events are free to the public. Don't miss bingo every Monday with Santa at the Villas by the Sea -- it's free and a children's favorite. Stick around for the January 1st Bluegrass festival, 3 days of America's favorite grass roots music. Best Way To Get Around:
Drive onto the island via a causeway connected to the mainland. The island is best known as a bicycle paradise with 50 miles of bike trails. All the hotels and businesses rent bikes including six-passenger surreys. There are no traffic lights because there is hardly any traffic, so walking is a leisurely pleasure. Tram tours run thru the historic district every day. There is a class A marina and two local airfields (one on the island), plus a regional airport on the mainland.
