We love Puerto Vallarta

Overview

Quote:
This place is the BEST in many categories. The weather cannot be beat. The people are wonderful. There are fabulous restaurants for every taste and budget. And there are wonderful timeshare resorts and great side trips.Quick Tips: If you are looking for something different to do, I suggest hiring a car and driver for the day. Our driver took us to several small towns in the area, as well as Bucerias and Sayulita. We were gone for seven hours and spent our time the way we wanted rather than being dictated by a bus tour. It actually cost us less than a regular tour. Check at the hotel. Often the concierge may know of English speaking local guides.Best Way To Get Around: Transpo...Read More

Best Things Nearby:The location of this resort is great. The bus stops right outside. Or it is an inexpensive cab ride to most anywhere. The Gigante supermarket is right across the street.Best Things About the Resort:They have several pools, tennis and a great walking beach (although the hurricane of 2002 hurt it some). There is a first class health club and a great spa. Resort Experience:Very friendly resort. Easy to get to meet people. We actually preferred the quiet pool area at the Villa del Mar, which is adjacent and part of the Villa del Palmar. The resort also has a very nice barbeque area which many guests use to prepare meals. This is a really...Read More

Best Things Nearby:Downtown Puerto Vallarta is within walking distance. Also, there’s good shopping and the Mega grocery store is very close. You can get downtown in about 20 minutes on foot or in five minutes by bus.Best Things About the Resort:There is a lovely pool that is for the timeshare area. The pool area has been redone since the hurricane and it is better than before. Also, you can use all the amenities of the Sheraton, which are extensive. They have a nice fitness center, which is free for RCI guests. But the best asset of this resort is its proximity to town and transportation.Resort Experience:We recently revisited this resort. The common areas ha...Read More

Best Things Nearby:The marina area is within easy walking distance. Puerto Vallarta can be reached by bus for 4 pesos or by taxi within about 15 minutes for about $4.Best Things About the Resort:The pool is out of this world. There are beautiful palm trees all around. You can sit near the activities area or find a lounge chair near a quiet section. They also have a great playground area for the kids that they have moved near the hotel pool. The rooms are spacious and each bedroom has its own king size bed and balcony with a hot tub. Many people we spoke with (my husband included) feel the hot tub on the balcony is the best thing about the rooms. Resort Ex...Read More

Portobello

Restaurant

Quote:
This restaurant came highly recommended from a fairly critical diner that we met at the pool. So we decided to try it. We were not disappointed. The setting is lovely because it is at the end of the marina and the view is terrific. Everything that was being served looked fabulous, but our choice was the seafood grill for two. It was a bit pricey at 670 pesos, but we took the recommendation of our poolside acquaintance and shared it amongst the four of us. There was more than enough, including a half lobster each! This was the best meal we had during our stay and we had some wonderful meals and, because of our selection, it was one of the most reasonable.

Barcelona Tapas

Restaurant

Quote:
This is one of our favorites. The portions are larger than tapa size, more like half portions. The food is wonderful and it is very reasonable for what you get. There is a great view of the city from the top of the hills. There are lots of steps to get to the rooftop, though; I was told that there are 67, so this is not for physically challenged individuals. Our favorite tapas dishes are the beef tenderloin and the sizzling garlic shrimp. They also have great cold tapas. There is a little complimentary appetizer when you sit down and a kahlua drink when you leave. This restaurant has become very popular, so if you want to sit on the rooftop (they have added more seating on a lower level), be s...Read More

Hector's is located a block from the Sheraton Buganvilias, as you head toward town. This property suffered significant damage from the hurricane of 2002 and was closed for a year. As you approach the restaurant from the street, you might think this is someone’s idea of a bad joke. But keep on going because the restaurant, which has a beautiful outdoor patio on the beach and breathtaking sunsets, is anything but a joke. The food and service are great. The prices are very reasonable, especially if you are in the market for their daily specials. The day we went they were serving a large shrimp cocktail along with a rib steak and side dishes as well as dessert, all for less than $1...Read More

La Casita is located in the neighborhood hills north of downtown. I recommend you take a taxi the first time because it can be hard to find. The street is very steep, so if walking is an issue, a taxi is a necessity. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. It is very small, so reservations are important. The first time we came we were late by 10 minutes because we couldn't find it. They had given away our table and we were, naturally, very disappointed. But they brought another table up from the basement, no easy feat, and quickly made room for us. Many dishes are made tableside. Everything is wonderful. If you are looking for Mexican food, this is not y...Read More

This restaurant came highly recommended from several sources, so we made the trek out to Pitillal to try it. We tried to combine some sightseeing in the town with our dinner outing, but the restaurant itself is far from the center of town and the walk is uphill most of the way. The food was very good, but I am not sure it was worth the trip. Also, the setting is near the road and there is a lot of traffic noise. We found food just as good and better ambience at other restaurants in Puerto Vallarta.
