History at Williamsburg, VA

A September 2003 trip to Williamsburg by schantz1972

There is history at every turn in and around Williamsburg, VA. Be sure to visit the James River Plantations and the Yorktown Battlefield and Historic Jamestown. We also took a road trip to Chincoteague Island to see the ponies, and sat on a beautiful beach at Tom's Cove.

Fairfield Kingsgate Ramada InnBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Fairfield Kingsgate"

Fairfield Kingsgate is a gated community and has a very colonial feel. We had a one-bedroom unit, so it didn't have a balcony, but I believe the two-bedroom units have them. The room was extremely neat and clean with a mini kitchen equipped with everything you need. I have guessed above that the room was $100-$150 per night, but I'm not certain because we had a free week with RCI and got the entire week for $139.

Christiana Campbell's serves period 1700s food with an atmosphere to match. We actually went back twice as we enjoyed it so much. They explain 1700s traditions, foods, etc. and make the meal a most enjoyable experience. There is entertainment comparable to what it would have been in the 1700s. They also send you away with a small pamphlet with some of the recipes on it if you ask. This is a 5-star restaurant.

We had an excellent prime rib dinner for two here, and at a special price compliments of our lodging, Fairfield at Kingsgate. This has a steakhouse look and an excellent dessert with a chocolate brownie, ice cream, and chocolate sauce!

Kings Arms TavernBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This is another restaurant inside Colonial Williamsburg with most excellent dining and ambiance. They serve food from the 1700 period and explain period habits, rituals, entertainment, etc. with servers all dressed in period costume. They are most happy to answer any questions you might have, and the entertainment is exceptional. This is a five-star restaurant.

Chowning's TavernBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

We were extremely disappointed in Chowning's Tavern after having eaten at Christiana Campbell's, Kings Arms, and Sheilds Taverns. This was a very informal affair where we walked through a cafeteria line, purchased a sandwich, a plastic dish of cole slaw, a bag of chips, and a bottle of pop. We felt it was very overpriced and not at all what we expected for Colonial Williamsburg.

The TrellisBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This is an excellent restaurant in the marketplace at Colonial Williamsburg that was comfortable and priced just right. Be sure to have the "cheesecake" which is not a dessert at all, but rather a thick quiche with the consistency of cheesecake. The ingredients are different every day. We had Virginia ham and cheddar cheese and it was delicious. They are famous for their dessert, Death by Chocolate.

Restaurant

We had an exceptional breakfast here. We actually split the Plantation Breakfast, which was enough of everything for two people. It included bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, potatoes, and pancakes, and was absolutely delicious.

This is a large antique mall with lots of room. We found several things that we liked and they had a nice variety of everything from jewelry to furniture. It's not much of a drive from Williamsburg.
