Utrecht: city of thousands of flowers

A travel journal to Utrecht by Klompie

When I was young, I fell in love with Utrecht. That love has never disappeared and never will. If you are looking for the true "Dutch feeling": go to Utrecht, you will not regret it

Try to visit Utrecht on a Saturday. At the 'Oude Gracht' in the middle of Utrecht, there are many flower vendors, selling beautiful fresh flowers for next to nothing. Go and climb the Dom tower first though, if you want to see a spectacular view of Utrecht (might be a little bit difficult if you have to climb all those stairs with flowers in your hands).

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is the best way to get around. Everything is close by to each other, and you will see many things strolling along.

Restaurant

If you like steamed mussels, Tante's bistro is the place to be! They are delicious. Of course they also have chicken, steak, etc. on their menu which are also very tasty.

Attraction | "Flower Market at the "Oude Gracht""

If you like flowers, the weekly flower market on Saturdays is a must. You can buy 20 beautiful roses for $5, flower arrangements for no more than $10. It is breathtaking to see thousands and thousands of flowers displayed on the street like that. At the end of the day, prices will even drop because the vendors will not leave until everything is sold (of course you will not have as much choice). If you walk around in the center of Utrecht around 4 PM, 50% of the people will have a gorgeous bouquet in their hands.

DomtorenBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Dom Tower"

When you enter Utrecht, you cannot miss the Dom Tower. Once upon a time this tower was connected to the Dom church, but a bomb during the World War destroyed part of the church. The church was rebuilt but much smaller and a street was built between the church and the tower.

Nowadays you can climb the tower with a guide (tickets for sale at the small building connected to the tower). Be prepared though: there are many many many steps to be conquered before you reach the top and enjoy the spectaculair view of Utrecht.

Attraction | "Water biking in the canals"

A different way to see more of Utrecht is by renting a water bike at the 'Oude Gracht'. By 'peddling' through the canal, you can absorb more of the city and people watch when passing by the small bars and restaurants along the canal.

Attraction | "Bars at the "Oude Gracht""

When the weather is nice, the terraces along the Oude Gracht are filled. The terraces are almost on 'canal level,' so the world goes by above you in the streets. Nothing is more relaxing than sitting at the Oude Gracht with friends and a nice, cold drink.
