Maltese week

An August 2003 trip to Qawra by Ziaba

Malta is a beautiful Mediterranean country. Small, but has plenty of history. Easy to get around if you take their buses.

Hotel

Club Riza is a clean resort -- they also clean the rooms daily except for dishes (you need to do those. The sheets are changed at mid-week of your stay. The staff was pleasant, especially the night staff. The location was good, close to the bus terminal (5-10 minute walk), down the block from one beach, and 10-15 minutes from the other near Buggiba. Buggiba has most of the souvenir shops and many of restaurants, jewelry stores. Qawra has a lot of the outdoor music with bands playing all night long, so you can't make a phone call though from their phone booths (besides the fact that they were out of order). There is also a pub in the resort that opens in the evening and you can have a fun time. Also, it has an internet café, so you can write home or just keep in touch with the outside world (1 Maltese Lire for 75 minutes, which is about $2.50). Many of the patrons are British since they get good deals to vacation in Malta. We met some people from the UK and spent every night after that joining them in the pub for a little chat and drinks. We even played a game of trivia in the pub and missed the prize by one answer.

Once we got to the room, the noise faded away. We had air conditioning through out the apartment (one bedroom, one bath, kitchen, living room, and dining area). We also had a beautiful view of the pool (crystal clear) and the bay just beyond the home across from us.

Malta is also very safe -- I didn't feel unsafe at any time during my trip in Malta. The only complaint I'd have is that the outdoor pool closes around 6 or 6:30pm for cleaning (but it definitely is clean and deep). The indoor pool is still open, but if you are hot that's not where you want to go, it is like a bathtub. Must be nice in colder weather. I read from others it had a restaurant, but it was closed when we went, only the poolside snack bar seemed to be open. Still good food though.

Restaurant

Luzzus has a sign that says it's a cafeteria, but it's anything but a cafeteria. The food is excellent and the view is of the Qawra Bay. It is air-conditioned, which was very necessary the week I was in Malta (temperatures reached the mid-30s C on a couple of days). The staff is very nice and very efficient -- they work hard and are always moving. You need to get there before you plan on eating since the place does fill up rapidly around dinnertime. Their chocolate fudge cake is to die for -- I don't like too much chocolate, but I found myself there every night for the cake.
