My First Trip to Hawaii

A March 2000 trip to Oahu by Janna

I took my best friend. She is D3, we took the last flight out, DFW/SFO, slept in the airport, hopped the first flight to HNL. We only had 3 days so we made the best of it. We bought tickets to the west, $500 we hadn't budgeted.

You have to dive here. The snorkeling was great. We also visited the Marketplace and that was nice. The thing we loved most is that we didn't have to wear shoes anywhere. The pork sandwich at the Don Ho restaurant was the best food I had the whole trip. It's even good as a leftover.

Quick Tips:

Buy a road map...it is a must. Make sure your hotel room has a fridge, because saves big bucks on food. Don't forget your waterproof camera and sew a little pocket in your swimsuit to hold a key and some money.

Best Way To Get Around:

We did not go into downtown Honolulu, but I would suggest using public transportation or taxis.
It was nice because we had an ocean view room. Most of the metal throughout the building was rusty due to the salt in the air. We had to pay to park at the hotel. We could easily walk to the beach and the beach house had rental equipment for diving/snorkeling and sold cameras and other things. The concierge was a nice lady, very fun to talk to, and very informative about the area.

Seems to be a favorite for everyone. The food was really good and reasonably priced. The servers were very nice and accommodating. There was live entertainment and a nice view of the ocean harbor.

This was the best part of the trip. We had third row seats and they were great. Remember you cannot take snapshot photos, but you must have a camcorder. The little shops are a bit pricey, but they have one of a kind items. You can spend a whole day there and never experience it all.

There are actually a good deal of nice fish to see. Unfortunately all of the coral has been robbed by tourists. You have to be careful of the tide so that you are not taken out too far. The water is COLD...!
