Cullman has plenty to offer a visitor

A travel journal to Cullman by Tideone

Cullman travel officials like to say a visit to Cullman is an "Unforgettable Experience" and after our visit last weekend I will have to agree with them.

The highlight of our visit to Cullman was a visit to the Ave Maria Grotto.

Best Way To Get Around:

There is no way around it - you have to have a car if you visit Cullman.

Hampton InnBest of IgoUgo

Hotel

Like every other place we go, we always search for a Hampton Inn. This one is located just off Interstate 65 and offers all the other amenities that other Hampton Inn's do. This one has a Cracker Barrel restaurant within walking distance which made it nice. We skipped the continental breakfast at the Hampton and went to the Cracker Barrel.

My wife loves the Cracker Barrel and she loved it that our Hampton Inn was just a short distance away. We ate both dinner and breakfast and found that a lot of the locals also eat at this Cracker Barrel.

Ave Maria GrottoBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

This is a must see - there is nothing else like it. This four acre site consists of more than 125 minature reproductions of famous churches, shrines, and buildings. It was built by Brother Joesph Zoettle over a period of 40 years and is located on the grounds of Alabama's first and only Benedictine Abbey.

This museum is located in a replica of the original home of Colonel John G. Cullman, the founder of the city and the county, that now bear his name. There are eight rooms in the house that are filled with thousands of items that relate to the history of the city. My favorite exhibit was Main Street, which brings to life the variety of stores that could be found on the Main Street of Cullman over a hundred years ago.

Cullman DepotBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

While it now serves a different purpose than what it was built for, the Cullman Depot brings back memories of when trains were the lifeblood of the country. The depot has been designated a historical landmark by the National Register of Historic Places. The lobby of the pueblo style stucco building contains displays of vintage railroad related items.
