Summer in Newport

A June 2002 trip to Newport by Miss O

My friends and I spent 3 months on a working holiday in Newport in the summer of 2002!

Definitely visit the obvious things like the mansions and Ocean Drive, Fort Adams (even though in 3 months we never got there!) and if you have a car and like shopping, go to Providence -- Providence Place Mall is 4 floors of heaven!

Quick Tips:

If you collect Nantucket baskets, Shrimshaw, or anything collectible really, check out Newport Trading Company, 170 Thames Street, up near Brick Alley pub -- ask for Mike or Joe. I worked with them for the summer and they're lovely people!

Best Way To Get Around:

We either walked or got the bus everywhere for 3 months and we managed fine! The Ripta Trolley are very for going to the beach

Hotel | "Hyatt"

Some girls we know in Newport worked in this hotel and we all went for there for breakfast one morning at the end of the summer! The hotel is built on a mini island and is amazing! It's spotless clean and the service was excellent . . . the views are amazing -- I can't stress that enough!

Restaurant | "Aidans"

Lots of people have mentioned the Red Parrot and Brick Alley Pub. I've eaten in both and they are gorgeous, but we used to eat in Aidans a lot and nobody has mentioned it! It's an Irish pub (home away from home!), and the food and sercive were both excellent!

Attraction | "Nightlife in general"

There are no nightclubs as such in Newport, but there are loads of pubs to choose from. O'Briens was always good on Wednesday nights for karaoke. The Rhino Bar is good on the weekends for something lively. The Garden was good mid-week for a quiet drink and maybe a game of pool, but my favorite was Aiden’s on Broadway, where we could often be found any night of the week. Live traditional Irish bands often played there!
