Most of the hotels on the Big Island are in Kona, which is a three-hour drvie from the volcano park. You must go to see the volcano at night. It is awesome. You get the full effect of the lava flowage when you walk on the lava fields and can see the glow of the lava flow at night
Quick Tips:
Stay one night at the ALoha Junction B&B. They provide you with walking sticks, and flashlights to use when you go to the lava fields.
Also, it is worth the money taking the helicopter tour over the volcano with Blue Hawaiian tours.
Don't take any lava rock home with you . . . it is not a myth.
Best Way To Get Around:
The easiest and only way to get around the island is by car. A must!
