Overview

The Motor City
Although it used to be a high crime city, downtown Detroit has been undergoing a revitalization and has been transformed into a lively, bustling area. Many of the old buildings have been cleaned and restored and are now designated as heritage buildings, including the Motown Museum. Even the Detroit River has been proclaimed a heritage river because it played a major role for slaves who escaped to freedom in Canada. The riverfront has a nice walking trail and is home to parties and celebrations including the Ethnic Festival held every summer.

The People Mover rapid transit system whisks people along the waterfront and into Greektown which is home to lots of shops, restaurants and yummy Greek bakeries as well as a large, modern casino. Two of my favorite restaurants here are Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Cafe and Pizza Papolis.

On a sunny day, many people head for the quiet of Belle Isle park where they can walk, jog, bicycle or just catch a few rays.

Like all big cities, there are still areas where I wouldn’t wander by myself at night but overall, Detroit can be a fun place to spend a few days sightseeing.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The 'People Mover' is a light rail type of rapid transit that offers a 15-minute ride around the downtown & waterfront area and costs 50 cents.

Located in Greektown, this cajun restaurant is loud, fun & has great food. If you're feeling adventurous, try the aligator appetizer or crawfish etoufee. The jambalaya is very good and lots of people recommend the whiskey ribs. If you have room for dessert, the Bourbon Street bread pudding is a winner! Kids like the colourful, plastic "Mardi Gras" beads that you get when leaving the restaurant.

Restaurant | "Pizza Papolis"

This popular pizza parlour serves great pizza (try the vegetarian or meat lovers) with a spicy tomato sauce and thick crust. You can also get salads & appetizers (try the antipasto salad or garlic cheese bread - a meal in itself). There are a couple of locations in the suburbs as well.

Attraction | "The Motown Museum"

Motown - Hitsville USA
As a 60’s kid growing up across the river in Canada, I spent hours signing along to the music of the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and others. My friend’s living room became our stage where we attempted (with little success) to copy the smooth moves of these soul groups. Returning many years later to Detroit, I knew that I had to make a visit to the Motown Museum.

It is designated as an official historical site for the State of Michigan and is located in the original two story house, named Hitsville U.S.A., where many of the 60s hits were recorded. The house was purchased in the late 1950s by Motown founder Berry Gordy and the main floor was converted into a recording studio while the top floor was his living quarters.

The house looks much like it did in the 60s. First impression of the outside is that it’s a bit run down but inside, much of the original recording equipment is still in place and it’s quite interesting to see the large 3 track tape machine, 8 track machine and other equipment that were used until 1972 when Motown moved its offices to California. The sound studio where the artists performed is set up with chairs, microphones and musical instruments and it’s easy to imagine Marvin or Stevie or Diana doing their thing. The admission price includes a guided tour of the house which gives lots of detail on the recording process and the history of Motown. I learned that Motown became the world’s largest independent record company and sold music all over the world.

Throughout the museum, the walls are decorated with pictures of the various artists who called the studio home as well as gold albums that they received during their career.

The small gift shop has a few souvenirs - post cards, tapes & CDs but you can find a wider selection of Motown music online. The museum is open daily but hours vary so call for the schedule. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under 12. I enjoyed the museum and it brought back lots of memories but I’m not sure that kids would be impressed since the music belongs to an era before their time.

Belle IsleBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Belle Isle Lighthouse
This large park of approx. 1,000 acres is actually an island and can be reached via bridge from downtown. It's usually pretty busy on summer weekends - especially if there are fireworks happening. Among the attractions are a golf course, clean sandy beach with lifeguard, model yacht basin and lighthouse and it's a great place to jog, fly a kite or whatever takes your fancy.
