Nijmegen: City of Students

A travel journal to Nijmegen by Klompie

Nijmegen is a beautiful city. Although closeby to Germany, many old buildings have stayed intact during WW II bombings. Nowadays more than 40% of the inhabitants of Nijmegen are students.

One of the most beautiful views of Nijmegen is from the Waal bridge when you are entering the city. Especially in the evening, it gives you a spectaculair view of the 'Waalkade'.

The event of the year in Nijmegen is 'de Nijmeegse vierdaagse' in the third week of July. This is an international march of 4 days in which thousands of people participate for all over the world. Every evening there are many activities going on in the center of Nijmegen (free concerts etc.) This is really Nijmegen at its best!

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportion anywhere in the Netherlands is excellent, also in Nijmegen.

Restaurant

On the 'Waalkade', next to the river, the Waal (and also in the small streets leading to the Waalkade) there are many cosy restaurants and bars where the food is good at a reasonable price. In the summer they will have terraces outside with a 'free view' of the river, the Waal. You will see many of the 'locals' (students) here.

ValkhofBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Park 't Valkhof is situated on a small hill. In this park several historical buildings can be found: the 'Sint Nicolaas' chapel that was built in 1030 and the 'Sint Maartens' royal chapel from 1150. The Sint Nicolaas chapel is still in fairly good shape, the Sint Maartens chapel is also named the 'Barbarossa-ruine,' after the nickname of German ruler Frederik I van Hohenstaufen.

Every year in May, a music festival is organized with traditional Dutch music called 'Dag van het Levenslied'.

Attraction | "Casino"

For a nice evening out, you can visit the Casino on the Waalkade. It is one of the few (legal) casinos that the Netherlands has, and it is run very professionally. Before or after gambling, you can stroll along 'de Waal,' since the casino is located right next to this river.

Weekly marketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Every Monday the center of Nijmegen fills up with stalls. Merchants will have everything you can imagine for sale: vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, fabric, plants, flowers, kitchen supplies etc. Many locals go to this market to get good deals, because most products are less expensive than in a regular store (and the food is nice and fresh).

The event of the year in Nijmegen is the 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse.' Thousands and thousands of participants come from all over the world in the third week of July to walk this prestigious march. From soldiers in uniforms to farmers in wooden shoes, everyone can walk as long as you register on time (months in advance).

For those who do not look forward to blisters, watching all these enthousiastic marchers walk by singing songs in different languages is a lot of fun. Or you can go to the center of Nijmegen where activities are organized day and night, like free concerts, performing acrobats, fairs, kiddie rides etc. You can spend hours soaking up the atmosphere and talking to people from Japan, the US, Canada, Scotland, France, Sweden, Italy, Greece etc.
