ENJOY WANDERING THE STREETS OF WASAGAMING: It's not for everyone, but if you enjoy a little bit of creature comfort when you go to the lake, this town offers it. With shops, cafes, a dance hall, beautiful beachfront, and even a log-cabin movie theatre, there's plenty to enjoy in town. VISIT THE BISON AT LAKE AUDY: Yes, there is a well-maintained wild herd of bison that is easy to visit. It’s usually easy to find too. The best times to see them are morning and late afternoon. HIKING: There are lots of wonderful trails of various lengths and difficulty, including backcountry trails. Hiking is the best way to see most sections of the park. SWIMMING: Both Clear Lake and a few other ...Read More

Attraction | "Highway 19 and the East Gate"

Riding Mountain National Park Photo, Manitoba, Canada

Highway 19 is a dirt road that climbs eastward, taking you out of the boreal forest and into deciduous forest. Don't hold your breath, but you're ascending into the highest parts of Manitoba! There are a lot of good places to stop along this route. Clear Lake Bog is a nice place to picnic or to see the springs that feed form the bog, which later feeds Clear Lake. Whirlpool Lake is delightful. There is a massive shallow water lake here at the top of this plateau. It would be a great place to camp. The small campground has a kitchen shelter, well water, and outhouses. This is a good lake for canoeing and fishing. It is also a good one to wander around. The Cowan Lake trail has a t...Read More

Attraction | "Grey Owl's Cabin"

Riding Mountain National Park Photo, Manitoba, Canada

The famed naturalist Archie Belaney (known as Grey Owl) was the first naturalist hired by the National Park Service. His title was "caretaker of park animals." The famous Grey Owl lived in the cabin at the end of this trail for six months. The trail head is just off of Highway 19, near the junction with Highway 10. If you were without transport, you could hike here from Wasagaming, probably adding 8 or 9km to your hike (one-way). At first the trail seems wonderful as you walk amongst dense forest. Magnificent birch trees are particularly striking. The route is broken nicely after about 3.1km by a hut, where there is an outhouse and a shelter. During winter, this is a cr...Read More

Attraction | "Lake Audy and the Bison Enclosure"

Riding Mountain National Park Photo, Manitoba, Canada
Quote:
Out towards the west end of the park the terrain flattens out. This area does feel like you're in the prairies. And it's perfect for bison. Thus, there’s the bison enclosure. The enclosure is a fairly significant chunk of land fenced off for the use of the bison. The herd is wild, but their well-being is maintained by Parks Canada. Their natural habitat of fescue grassland has been protected and preserved here, and it is wonderful to see the heard of 30 or so animals grazing the grasslands or keeping cool in the wooded areas. It's hard to describe what it feels like to see them. Suddenly there's this sense of excitement that you wouldn't expect. They really are magnificent animals. ...Read More

Swimming!

Story/Tip

On a hot day the clear, cool waters of Clear Lake are most inviting, and the lake's sandy beaches are popular. The beach in Wasagaming has changing rooms and washrooms, as well as outdoor showers. And this is a great place for families to swim. It will be packed during the afternoon, particularly on weekends all summer long. But packed by Western Canadian standards, it isn't really that packed. To escape the crowds, however, there are several quieter swimming areas on the lake. A particularly good one is just past the "Wishing Well" on the lake's north side. However, the lake gets quite deep here, and quickly. This is not a good spot for children or weak swimmers. But it is a quiet and beautiful ...Read More
