Smokeeating in Montana

Overview

Quote:
Coming from Canada we drove through Glacier Park on the Going to the Sun highway. The scenery and wildlife sited was outstanding. Remember, driving south you are on the inside of the road. If heights are a problem, driving south to north you are on the outside. But don't miss this drive. A little over an hour to make it through the Park to Columbia Falls.Quick Tips: Bigfork is a small town 45 minutes from Columbia Falls. Many galleries devoted to art and sculpture right on Flathead Lake. Well worth the trip. For shopping, 30 minutes or less will get you to Kalispell (on the way you pass a Costco) where a shopping center is located as well as the usual K Mart, Walmart, etc.Best Way To Get ...Read More

Great local restaurant. In a building hidden at the back, the main name is the Night Owl in front. It has everything, including steak, chicken, all kinds of ribs, served in large helpings with beans, slaw, pan bread, and potatoes. Lots of beers on tap as well, super friendly people, with even a resident magician.

Both coming and going, we passed numerous forest fires out of control. The smoke at times was tough to take, but the sight of those beautiful woods burning was something to behold. At some locations, you could see how close to the highway the fires had come, the ground still covered with ash with only skeletons remaining of what had been trees.
