Barging in Burgundy-Sept, 2000

A September 2000 trip to Dijon by syoungblood

Our week barge around Dijon more than met our expectations of plans made more than one year in advance. The scenery was beautiful, food and wine were fantastic and the daily tours to chateaus, monastaries, wineries, vineyards, villages were awesome. The balloon ride late afternoon was spectacular! Everyone should take a trip like this.

Le Chateau De Commarin was our favorie place near Dijon; Pont du Gard near Nimes and the Roman arena in Nimes are fantastic. We also saw The Beaux of Provence, drove to Cassis and visited the Palace of the Popes in Avignon. You can see a lot in Provence and not have to travel far. For this you need a car and I would recommend the TGV to Avignon and rent a car there.

Quick Tips:

Definitely use the TGV and buy the saver package. Plan to take a 2 hour nap when you check in to your hotel. Get up and walk around the town, have a nice dinner and stay up until midnight. You will adjust quickly.

Best Way To Get Around:

TGV, Renting a car is ok unless you are in Paris. Use a lot of caution- do not pack valuables where they are visible. Cars are expensive. ATM's are everywhere and probably by next year, the Eurodollar will be widely used throughout Europe.
